Kolkata Knight Riders, the three-time IPL champions, are continuing a worrying slide in the 19th edition of the T20 league. They are still the only side without a win, occupying the last spot in the points standings after managing just a single point from six matches. That latest setback came on Friday when KKR were beaten by the Gujarat Titans by five wickets at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, adding to the mounting pressure on the franchise’s leadership.
With a string of disappointing results, criticism has intensified around KKR’s setup—particularly head coach Abhishek Nayar and captain Ajinkya Rahane—while the team’s on-field displays have failed to deliver any clear momentum in IPL 2026.
Kevin Pietersen’s prediction on KKR’s next coach
Amid the struggles, former England captain Kevin Pietersen made a high-profile call, suggesting that Brendon McCullum would take over as KKR coach for the next season. Pietersen urged followers to remember the prediction, writing on X that “Baz McCullum will be the coach of KKR next season. Bookmark this tweet.”
McCullum is not an unfamiliar name to the franchise. He previously coached KKR for three seasons, from 2020 to 2022, before moving on to become the Test coach of the England national team. At present, he remains contracted to the England and Wales Cricket Board, with his coaching term for England’s men set to run until the end of 2027.
KKR’s coaching framework for IPL 2026
KKR had appointed Abhishek Nayar as head coach ahead of IPL 2026. The coaching group for the season also includes Shane Watson, Dwayne Bravo and Tim Southee. Even with that mix of major T20 experience in the staff, the franchise has continued to find it difficult to convert performances into results.
Why the absence of Gautam Gambhir is being felt
There is also a growing sense within KKR’s camp that the absence of a figure like Gautam Gambhir has been noticeable. With the team yet to find consistent rhythm, the management has appeared to be making adjustments frequently, but none have produced the desired impact so far in IPL 2026.
It is also a reminder that all three of KKR’s IPL titles arrived during periods when Gambhir was connected with the franchise in some role. He won two trophies as captain, while the third title came after he took up the position of mentor.
Injuries and uneven availability
Injuries have further complicated KKR’s campaign. Harshit Rana was ruled out of IPL 2026 before the tournament even began. Matheesha Pathirana, too, missed the opening six matches for the franchise. The Sri Lankan pacer has received a No Objection Certificate from Sri Lanka Cricket, but there is still uncertainty around when he will return to action for KKR.
Rahane’s form and KKR’s ongoing points problem
Captain Ajinkya Rahane’s batting has also failed to meet expectations. His poor start—an ugly hoike on the first ball he faced against the Gujarat Titans—was seen as another reflection of how KKR’s season has gone so far.
As it stands, KKR remain rooted at the bottom of the points table with only one point from six games. That lone point was earned because of an abandoned match against Punjab Kings, leaving the franchise still searching for its first win of the tournament.
