NEW DELHI: Kolkata Knight Riders are in the midst of a difficult IPL 2026 stretch, having suffered their fifth loss of the season and still failing to find the right answers. The two-time champions sit at the bottom of the table with only one point, earned in a rain-affected encounter against Punjab Kings. With results going against them in batting, bowling and fielding, the tension has been obvious in the dugout, where skipper Ajinkya Rahane and the rest of the group have faced growing scrutiny.
Pietersen calls for a big coaching shake-up
Amid the slide, former England batter Kevin Pietersen put forward a clear prediction, suggesting that KKR may have to consider a substantial change in their coaching structure. He pointed to a familiar name from the franchise’s past—Brendon McCullum—and implied that the next season could bring a move in that direction.
“Baz McCullum will be the coach of KKR next season. Bookmark this tweet,” Pietersen said.
KKR had already altered their coaching team before IPL 2026, bringing in Abhishek Nayar as head coach and moving on from Chandrakant Pandit. However, the change has not translated into improved performances so far.
McCullum, meanwhile, is currently working as England’s head coach and remains in that role under contract until the 2027 World Cup.
McCullum’s links with KKR
McCullum has a long-standing connection with Kolkata Knight Riders. He played for the franchise during the 2008–2010 period and then again from 2012 to 2013. Later, he returned to the coaching role as head coach between 2020 and 2022, guiding KKR to the IPL 2021 final.
KKR’s season record and the extent of their struggles
The numbers this season underline how challenging things have been for KKR. They have not managed a win yet, losing five of their six matches, while one game was abandoned without a result. Their net run rate currently stands at -1.149, reflecting the difficulty they have faced in both defending totals and building competitive scores.
The defeats have come against Mumbai Indians (by 6 wickets), Sunrisers Hyderabad (by 65 runs), Lucknow Super Giants (by 3 wickets), Chennai Super Kings (by 32 runs) and Gujarat Titans (by 5 wickets), leaving KKR’s campaign looking bleak at this stage.
Rahane’s message after yet another loss
After the latest defeat, Rahane acknowledged that it was another demoralising outcome but said he wanted to keep conversations focused on what could still be improved. He admitted the immediate aftermath of a loss is never comfortable, yet stressed the need to look for positives as the team tries to stabilise.
“It’s never easy to come out and talk immediately after losing a game. But I’d like to focus on the positives. The way we started, losing three wickets early, it was tough,” Rahane said following the five-wicket loss.
He also highlighted Cameron Green’s impact, noting that the batter had been under pressure but still found a way to counter-attack effectively. Rahane added that reaching the vicinity of 180 from 147 for 4 proved slightly more demanding for KKR as a batting unit.
“Cameron Green’s innings was outstanding—he was under pressure, but the way he responded and took on their bowlers was amazing to watch. At 147 for 4, getting to around 180 was slightly difficult for us as a batting unit,” he said.
Rahane concluded by pointing to the effort from KKR’s bowling group, insisting that even when momentum is not with a side, the bowlers continued to fight and apply pressure.
“I still want to credit our bowlers. It’s not easy when things aren’t going your way, but they kept coming back and pushing hard.”
