Sunrisers Hyderabad have added Gerald Coetzee to their IPL 2026 squad as an injury cover, bringing the South Africa fast-bowling allrounder in for the rest of the season. Coetzee arrives as a replacement for David Payne and will be paid INR 2 crore.
Injury replacement: Coetzee comes in for Payne
Payne, a 35-year-old left-arm pace bowler, was ruled out of the tournament after suffering an ankle injury. In the limited time he had in IPL 2026, he conceded 70 runs from five overs across two matches.
Payne had originally earned his spot in the SRH squad after coming in for Australia’s Jack Edwards, who pulled out even before the competition began due to a foot problem.
Coetzee’s form and prior IPL experience
Coetzee’s most recent action for South Africa came during their five-match T20I series in New Zealand in March. In the fourth match of that series, he played a key role in South Africa’s victory, finishing with figures of 3 for 31.
He has also featured in the IPL previously, with two different franchises:
- For Mumbai Indians in 2024, he took 13 wickets in 10 matches.
- For Gujarat Titans in 2025, he claimed two wickets in four games.
SRH squad updates: Carse ruled out, Cummins nearing return
SRH have also been hit with the loss of Brydon Carse, with the England allrounder sidelined by a hand injury. Carse had taken a blow during net practice at the start of the 2026 season and, as a result, did not appear in any match for Hyderabad. SRH responded by bringing in Sri Lanka quick Dilshan Madushanka as his replacement.
While dealing with these setbacks, SRH do have a positive development: Pat Cummins has been cleared to rejoin the squad after scans on his back in Sydney. Cummins has not played in the season so far, and he could aim for a comeback during SRH’s game against Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur on April 25.
Points table and next match
With two wins from five matches, SRH currently sit fifth on the points table. Their next assignment is a home game against Chennai Super Kings at Hyderabad on Saturday.
