Rahane Left Stunned as KKR’s IPL Woes Continue After Another Winless Start

Ajinkya Rahane is finding himself in the firing line at the moment. The Kolkata Knight Riders captain is feeling the heat after another disappointing start to IPL 2026, with his side still searching for their first proper rhythm. After six outings, KKR have managed just a single point, with that slender return coming via rain at Eden Gardens against Punjab Kings rather than through a complete, results-driven performance. Rahane, a veteran of Indian cricket, has been trying to project calm, but the scrutiny has only intensified following a rough moment against Gujarat Titans—his ugly hook at the very start of the innings he faced against Mohammed Siraj served as an early signal that confidence, at least in that phase, was not where it needed to be.

The contest between Gujarat Titans and KKR may have stretched close to the finish line, yet the chase for Shubman Gill and company was never truly in danger. KKR were left to chase a target of 181, and in the end they did not have to produce anything close to a dramatic late surge. Rahane, though, has been among KKR’s more productive batters in IPL 2026. Still, the fan reaction has turned sharply negative after what has been a largely unconvincing run across the six matches played so far. So when Rahane was caught off guard by a reporter who praised him for the work he puts in day after day, it stood out as a rare, emotional moment amid the pressure cooker atmosphere.

Rahane’s face showed genuine feeling when he thanked the journalist for recognising the effort he has been putting in behind the scenes. The exchange went like this: Reporter: “Congratulations first for your hard work.” Rahane: “Thank you so much, thank you. Someone really appreciated my hard work.” In the same breath, Rahane urged everyone to stay steady through the rough patches. He spoke about the need for the franchise to absorb setbacks without losing belief and to aim for a swift reversal of fortunes. With KKR losing five of their first six matches, the task ahead has become especially steep, and they now require a significant turnaround—winning at least seven of their final eight games—to keep qualification within reach.

Rahane also reflected on the wider context of KKR’s recent failures. Under his leadership last season, the team did not make the playoffs either, ending up in eighth place. In his view, the only way forward is to treat difficult phases as part of the job rather than as a reason to fold. “You’ve got to embrace those days, tough days as well. As a sportsman, keep your head up, keep trying your best every day. So, for us, it’s all about just going out there, being positive, playing with freedom,” Rahane said. He added, “Embrace these tough days as a team, as an individual. And every day is a new day, trying to get better, going out there. What we can do as a team is play with freedom, play to our potential and try to back each other, enjoy each other’s success.”

While batting battles have been underlined in recent games, Rahane pointed toward a deeper issue that has been shaping KKR’s season: their bowling. The franchise’s pace attack has struggled badly in IPL 2026, with their run rate per over sitting above 11, a mark that has left opponents too comfortable too often. The situation has not been helped by availability problems either. Harshit Rana was ruled out before the tournament began, while Matheesha Pathirana has yet to take the field for KKR. There has also been disruption in the squad’s bowling options—Mustafizur Rahman was released by the franchise after a directive from the BCCI, amid growing tensions between India and Bangladesh.

Rahane framed KKR’s bowling woes as a mix of inexperience and effort rather than a lack of intent. “The guys who are bowling in the powerplay are inexperienced. That’s the truth. That’s the honest truth. But they are still giving their best. They are trying their best to pick the wicket, which is not happening,” he said. He then named a few of the mainstays and reiterated that the process is still being worked on: “But as I said, Anukul Roy, Karthik Tyagi, Vaibhav Arora, they are really trying their best.”
