Sunrisers Hyderabad produced a high-pressure finish to beat Chennai Super Kings in a gripping IPL 2026 match at Hyderabad on Saturday. CSK appeared to be cruising in their 195-run pursuit, but SRH’s younger bowling unit turned the contest on its head, with Nitish Kumar Reddy and Eshan Malinga combining to take five wickets between them. The win carried extra emotion for SRH as well, with owner Kavya Maran celebrating wildly after the final whistle—punching the air and clapping in a social media clip that quickly went viral.
Chase details and the turning point
- Setting out to chase 195, CSK were restricted to 184 for 8.
- Eshan Malinga spearheaded the breakthrough spell, removing three batters for 29 runs in his four overs.
- Sakib Hussain added a key wicket, finishing with figures of 1/32 in four overs.
- Nitish Kumar Reddy struck twice, returning 2/31 from his four-over quota.
- Spinner Shivang Kumar kept the pressure on in the middle overs, taking 1/18 in three overs.
After the match, SRH captain Ishan Kishan said the result reflected what happens when a side’s emerging bowlers trust the plans and execute them. He highlighted the satisfaction of having young pacers who come up with their own ideas while still delivering the team’s structure, adding that it makes a captain’s task of setting fields far easier.
Kishan also explained that with Pat Cummins unavailable during the first half of the contest, he felt comfortable leaning on the youngsters. He noted that watching them improve day by day in training gave him confidence, and that the best way to grow players is to give them the ball and allow them to carry out what they believe in.
While Kishan was pleased with the bowling, he admitted SRH were at least 20 runs short on the batting track. Even so, the bowlers more than made up for that gap by preventing CSK from crossing the 200-run mark.
Gaikwad on the chase and the early damage
CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad pointed to the absence of substantial scoring bursts early in the chase as a major factor. He said that the target required roughly 80 runs in the first 10 overs, but their momentum stalled—CSK managed only four runs in the two overs immediately after the 10-over mark. In his view, reaching the death overs with only 12 or 13 runs needed becomes extremely difficult in T20 cricket.
Gaikwad praised SRH’s bowling for keeping the opposition below 200 and reflected on the powerplay as well. He felt that based on how the initial overs unfolded, CSK might have been in the 220–230 range, and that SRH’s ability to haul the total back by around 30 runs was decisive. He also remarked that it has been three consecutive matches where the SRH bowling unit has performed strongly.
On the positives from the batting side, Gaikwad singled out Abhishek for an especially impressive powerplay and added that the entire group contributed well with the ball’s supporting role during the innings.
