PBKS vs LSG IPL 2026: Shreyas Iyer’s Top-Spot Punjab Take on LSG at Mullanpur

Punjab Kings (PBKS) are set to face Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the upcoming IPL 2026 match at Mullanpur on Sunday, and the contest is already drawing plenty of attention for the form both sides have shown. PBKS currently sit at the top of the points table and appear to be building momentum off last season’s run to the final. While there were earlier concerns around some of their younger players, those worries have eased significantly this year, with PBKS looking far more fluent in their chase performances.

That confidence in pursuit is evident in the way they’ve been handling pressure. Whether it has been chasing 210 against CSK, 220 versus SRH, or 196 against MI, PBKS have made those targets look manageable. They’ve reached goals comfortably and, importantly, haven’t needed to lean heavily on their marquee names such as Marcus Stoinis and Shashank Singh to get the job done.

A major part of PBKS’ rise has been the influence of their skipper Shreyas Iyer. The captaincy, which PBKS have clearly benefited from, has brought structure and control to how the team plays. Along with that leadership role, Iyer’s own performances have also been strong, adding to the stability in the side’s batting and decision-making.

For LSG, the story has gone in the opposite direction. Their batting has struggled badly, a problem that shows up in the run charts. Mukul Choudhary’s 127 has been their leading tally, and even within that figure, 54 runs came during a match-winning display against KKR. Beyond individual efforts, Lucknow have also been slow at building innings, making them the lowest run-scoring team in the competition with a run rate of 8.1, while PBKS are operating at 10.9.

Ahead of the match, PBKS fast bowling coach James Hopes highlighted Iyer’s captaincy, describing it as largely rooted in experience. “From a captaincy viewpoint, it’s just experience. He’s got older. He was very young when he captained in Delhi, and he’s just more experienced. He’s very well-planned. He still follows his gut, even though he is well-planned. As I said, I can’t speak highly enough of him. If you see him at training, you see him around the team hotel, and that—he’s just one of the boys as well, which I think really endears him to the rest of the group,” Hopes said.

One potential concern for PBKS, however, is that their middle order has not yet been tested in the same depth as other parts of the batting lineup. If LSG manage to make early inroads, the match could open up and become more competitive than PBKS’ recent chases.

On the bowling front, LSG’s new-ball plan is expected to be spearheaded by Mohammed Shami and Prince Yadav. Lucknow’s campaign has been stop-start so far, and they are still searching for a consistent winning formula. With Rishabh Pant not contributing at the level expected, the pressure has also extended to other established names—Mitchell Marsh, Aiden Markram, and Nicholas Pooran—none of whom have recorded a fifty in five games. Pooran in particular has endured a difficult stretch, with his season described as a nightmare so far.
