Kolkata Knight Riders finally opened their account in IPL 2026 after roughly three weeks and close to half a season, yet their first victory did not come without major drama. The turnaround felt as messy as much of their campaign so far, with the team still searching for consistency as the season moved along.
KKR’s breakthrough began in a home chase of 156 against the Rajasthan Royals, but the innings started poorly. Both openers were dismissed for ducks within the first two overs, leaving the hosts under pressure almost immediately. Cameron Green then steadied the chase with an energetic 27 off 13 balls, taking Kolkata to 51 during the powerplay, before Rajasthan tightened the middle overs using spin to slow the momentum.
With the match poised for another twist, a potential third breakthrough slipped away—triggered by what Rajasthans players later branded a “silly” moment that ultimately swung the contest. That miscue proved decisive in Eden Gardens, where Rajasthan lost by four wickets, and the Royals camp left visibly frustrated.
The turning point came on the final ball of the 11th over. A quicker delivery outside off forced Rinku Singh into an awkward swipe, and the ball popped up off the leading edge toward short third man. Burger got himself set under the catch opportunity, but he ended up mishandling it, dropping the chance that could have ended KKR’s momentum early.
Dhruv Jurel was the first wicketkeeper to react as the ball rose, but he withdrew at the last moment after seeing Burger in position. Whether that hesitation played any role is unclear, though the body language in the field suggested irritation as the chance vanished. Rinku, who was on 8 at the time, survived the scare—and the missed wicket returned to punish Rajasthan. The KKR batter went on to craft a calm, controlled innings, helping revive Kolkata’s chase and guiding them to their first win of the season.
Riyan Parag calls out the drop after defeat
Rajasthan captain Riyan Parag did not mince words after the match, pointing directly to the dropped catch as the defining turning moment. He praised the team’s overall efforts in the contest, but underlined that fielding errors cannot be allowed to decide games.
“I think the way we clawed back, the effort the bowlers put in, I’ll say it was our game. No excuses there. We can’t be dropping catches, we can’t be bowling lines that help the batters. So, silly errors from our side. But this was our game,” Parag said during an interaction with the broadcasters.
Rajasthan had an opportunity to move to the top of the table with a win over Kolkata, but the defeat—only their second loss of the season—meant they remained in third place.
