Rajasthan Royals swung between brilliance and heartbreak during their clash with Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on Sunday. The day featured a game-changing piece of keeping from Dhruv Jurel that helped RR strike in the middle overs, but it was later overshadowed when a dropped chance involving Rinku Singh proved costly. In the end, Kolkata chased the target and secured a four-wicket win, handing Rajasthan their second defeat of the season.
The turning point arrived on the fourth ball of the fifth over. After losing both opening batters for ducks in the opening two overs, KKR began to steady the chase. Cameron Green played a quick cameo, smashing 27 runs off just 12 balls, before RR broke through in dramatic fashion.
As Green moved forward in an aggressive attempt, Ravi Bishnoi unleashed a googly aimed down the leg side. The ball deviated further away, and Green failed to connect. With the batter’s movement briefly taking Jurel out of the line, the wicketkeeper still managed to respond instantly—diving to his left, gathering the ball cleanly, and then whipping off a one-handed throw that struck the stumps at the right moment. Green couldn’t get back in time, and the bails came off as the wicket was claimed.
Jurel was left stunned by the speed and precision required to complete the chance, and so were his teammates. Even the broadcast commentary struggled to fully capture what had just unfolded, but the loudest praise came from an unexpected admirer. Watching the game, Sachin Tendulkar posted a screenshot of the dismissal and wrote: “Only one stump in sight, on the move, and done in the blink of an eye! Simply magnificent Dhruv Jurel!”
Former England batter Kevin Pietersen also reacted strongly, calling it “the greatest stumping ever in cricket.” RR’s momentum didn’t stop there, with their bowling tightening in the middle overs. Ravindra Jadeja struck twice, putting Kolkata under pressure and creating the sense that another wicket might follow.
A third breakthrough looked possible, but Nandre Burger let a routine chance slip when he failed to hold on to an easy opportunity to dismiss Rinku Singh on 8. That missed moment ultimately swung the contest back towards KKR. The vice-captain played a composed innings of 53 not out, helping Kolkata finish the chase and record their first victory of the campaign.
With the result, KKR moved up to ninth place in the points table. Rajasthan, meanwhile, missed the chance to go top—despite entering the match with that opportunity—because the defeat kept them third, following their second loss of the season.
Rajasthan will next face the Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on April 22.
