NEW DELHI: Tilak Varma produced one of the most ferocious batting displays in IPL history, not only converting to a century but outscoring the Gujarat Titans as a whole to help Mumbai Indians claim a convincing 99-run win on Monday. Varma finished unbeaten on 101 off 45 deliveries, turning the chase into a rout and writing his name into the record books.
The left-handed batter’s first IPL ton came with numbers that underlined just how unusual the innings was. His 45-ball century matched Sanath Jayasuriya’s 45-ball hundred from 2008, making it the joint-fastest century ever for Mumbai Indians in IPL cricket and placing him among an elite set of scorers.
What truly set the knock apart was the way it evolved. Varma began cautiously, managing just 17 runs from his initial 20 balls. Then came a sudden, brutal acceleration: he piled on 84 runs in the following 25 deliveries. The gap in strike rate between those two phases—a remarkable 251-run difference in rate—is the highest ever recorded in an IPL innings.
After the match, Varma explained the mindset behind the ramp-up. “I wanted to spend time in the middle. In the first 20 balls, I was just batting ball by ball. Then I knew the ability I have. It was about reading the situation and backing my skills.”
For close to 14 overs, the boundaries stayed conspicuously absent as he struggled to find momentum, scoring only 19 runs off 22 balls while still at the crease. From there, the innings flipped completely. His final 23 balls brought 82 more runs, including 15 fours, as he attacked the GT bowling with ruthless control and precision.
Records tumble in breathtaking finish
The last stretch became Varma’s personal highlight reel. He slammed 82 runs in the final six overs—setting the benchmark for the most runs by any batter in that phase of an IPL innings, surpassing Quinton de Kock’s previous mark of 80. He also struck 64 runs in the last four overs, the second-highest total for that period in IPL history, sitting just behind Tim David’s 68 earlier this season.
Batted at No. 5, Varma achieved another rare landmark, becoming only the fourth player in IPL history to register a century from that batting slot or lower. He joined a group that includes Yusuf Pathan, David Miller and Ben Stokes.
One stat stood out even further: Varma became the first Mumbai Indians batter ever to outscore the entire opposition in a single IPL match, with Gujarat Titans dismissed for 100 in reply to Mumbai’s total.
Varma also reflected on the significance of the milestone. “The first 100 will always be special… every game is important for us,” he said, while also praising his batting partner Naman Dhir. “The way he played with intent helped build momentum.”
The century delivered a long-awaited personal breakthrough as well. By playing his 60th IPL match, Varma finally earned his first Player-of-the-Match award, ending one of the lengthiest waits for that recognition in the tournament.
