Bumrah and Siraj Shine as MI Beat GT in IPL 2026, Pokes Spark Watch

Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj stand out as two of India’s most accomplished pace bowlers of the current era, and both are featuring in the IPL 2026. Bumrah is the Mumbai Indians’ leading strike option, while Siraj represents Gujarat Titans as part of a high-octane fast-bowling group that also includes Kagiso Rabada, Prasidh Krishna and Ashok Sharma. On Monday, the two quicks found themselves on opposite sides when MI took on GT.

In that contest, Bumrah brought an end to a five-match wicketless spell almost immediately—getting GT opener Sai Sudharsan with the very first ball he bowled. Siraj, meanwhile, also managed to claim a wicket, but Gujarat Titans still finished on the losing end.

After the match, the Gujarat and Mumbai camps shared a light-hearted moment between Bumrah and Siraj. Siraj has been a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in Telangana since October 2024, and his teammates frequently refer to him as “DSP.” Bumrah joked about whether Siraj had been promoted to commissioner, then added that whenever he visits Hyderabad, he never seems to find a car with a DSP number plate waiting for him.

During the same exchange, the humour continued as Siraj asked Bumrah for a bat. Bumrah’s response—framed in the same “DSP” banter—left no doubt that he was enjoying the moment with his fellow pacer.

With Mumbai Indians’ victory over Gujarat Titans, former New Zealand and MI fast bowler Mitchell McClenaghan praised the call to hand Bumrah the opening over. He described it as a “masterstroke,” and suggested that snapping his wicket drought would have been a significant relief for the star quick.

While Tilak Varma and pacer Ashwani Kumar drew attention with their contributions, the most important plus-point for MI in the win was Bumrah finally ending his six-match wicketless run in the IPL. That stretch dates back to the playoffs from last year, making the breakthrough at the start of the chase even more meaningful.

Bumrah was introduced right at the beginning to disrupt the early partnership between Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan—two batters known for their consistency at the top. One delivery was enough for Bumrah to underline his quality and impact, setting the tone for how MI wanted to attack the Gujarat innings.

Speaking on the Star Sports post-match show “Cricket Live,” McClenaghan said MI needed a bowler of Bumrah’s profile to function as an offensive weapon. He argued that Bumrah helped break the rhythm of GT’s highly reliable top order, which had so far been acting like a shield for a middle section that tends to be more vulnerable and less steady.

“Bumrah bowling the first over of the run chase was a masterstroke. That is exactly what we have been asking for in many games now. With no other bowler in MI’s line-up able to penetrate with the new ball, they needed Bumrah to be used as an attacking weapon. They used him in the first three overs to try and break the opening partnership of Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan, and Bumrah delivered,” McClenaghan said.

He added that GT rely heavily on their opening pair for the bulk of the scoring, and once that partnership is broken, their batting becomes noticeably more difficult. McClenaghan suggested that using Bumrah in the first over to remove one opener and force GT’s middle order into action reflects strong captaincy from Hardik Pandya. At the same time, he noted it may not be a strategy MI can repeat in every match, since other teams also have robust middle orders and Bumrah will still need to be positioned to penetrate them. Against Gujarat Titans, however, he felt the plan worked “perfectly.”
