Delhi Capitals’ IPL 2026 campaign suffered a damaging blow as they were bowled out for 195/9 in their chase, after posting a competition-high 242-run total in the first innings—only to end up on the losing side. The night was shaped by Abhishek Sharma’s breathtaking batting for Delhi, followed by sharp performances from Sunrisers Hyderabad, with former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin later taking aim at Delhi captain Axar Patel’s tactical choices.
Abhishek Sharma’s historic Delhi innings
Delhi Capitals set the pace by compiling their highest total of IPL 2026, reaching 242 runs. The innings was driven by Abhishek Sharma, who remained unbeaten on 135 and faced the full allocation, batting through all 20 overs to anchor the team’s charge.
However, despite the imposing total, Sunrisers Hyderabad responded with a strong showing to keep the chase under control and ultimately secure the result with plenty of margin.
Sunrisers Hyderabad’s dominant response
Sunrisers Hyderabad carried their momentum forward with a decisive 47-run win. Abhishek Sharma’s earlier fireworks were met by an even more impactful batting display from SRH, led by a 68-ball masterclass that featured ten fours and ten sixes.
Travis Head contributed 37, while Heinrich Klaasen finished on 37 not out, helping Sunrisers Hyderabad post 242/2, putting Delhi under immediate pressure in the chase.
Delhi Capitals’ chase and key contributors
- Delhi Capitals began the run chase with encouraging momentum, as KL Rahul made 37 and Nitish Rana struck 57 in a productive partnership.
- After those early contributions, Delhi lost rhythm following dismissals, allowing SRH to tighten the contest.
- Eshan Malinga then delivered the decisive bowling impact, claiming 4/32 as Delhi were restricted to 195/9.
Ashwin criticises Axar Patel’s bowling decisions
In the aftermath, Ravichandran Ashwin criticised Delhi’s captain Axar Patel for what he described as questionable bowling strategy, focusing particularly on the use of part-time bowler Nitish Rana.
Ashwin highlighted that Rana bowled his full four-over spell, conceding 55 runs, while Delhi’s frontline spinners were used for only two overs apiece. Kuldeep Yadav finished with figures of 1/23 in his two overs, and Axar Patel gave away 30 runs without taking a wicket.
Pointing to the imbalance in the bowling workload, Ashwin said that in Delhi’s attack—featuring Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Lungi, Mukesh, and Natarajan—the first player to complete the full quota was Rana, which he argued was the match’s turning point.
“In DC’s bowling attack, they have Axar Patel, Kuldeep, Lungi, Mukesh, and Natarajan. But the first player to complete his 4-over quota was Nitish Rana, and that’s where they lost the match. It has to be the biggest blunder so far,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel, Ash Ki Baat.
He further questioned the rationale behind leaning on a part-time option despite having multiple specialist bowlers available. “Conceding 50 runs in four overs is not a big deal, but if you have five regular bowlers, why did you go for a part-timer?” he added.
Impact on the IPL 2026 table
The defeat pushed Delhi Capitals down to fifth place in the standings. Sunrisers Hyderabad, meanwhile, climbed to third and continued their upward trajectory in IPL 2026 with the 47-run win.
