Virat Kohli Breaks Rohit’s T20 Mark, Sets New IPL Record vs CSK

Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s Virat Kohli etched his name into the IPL record books during their IPL 2026 clash against Chennai Super Kings on Sunday, achieving a milestone that will be talked about for years. In a compact knock of 28 runs from 18 balls, Kohli moved past Rohit Sharma to register the highest run tally against a single opponent in T20 cricket. Kohli now has 1,174 runs versus CSK, the most by any batter against one franchise in T20 format. Rohit’s best mark stands at 1,161 runs against Kolkata Knight Riders, amassed across his IPL stints with Mumbai Indians and Deccan Chargers. Kohli also sits third on the all-time list for runs against a single team, with 1,159 runs against Punjab Kings.

Kohli’s milestone and the bigger RCB breakthrough

The record moment came alongside a dominant team performance as RCB produced a pressure-filled outing at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. With Kohli contributing at the top, the focus quickly shifted to how Bengaluru built a massive total and then tightened the screws in the chase.

RCB’s batting fireworks set up a record total

RCB’s innings was powered by a steady blend of timing, aggression and late acceleration. Tim David, Rajat Patidar and Devdutt Padikkal played pivotal roles as the middle and lower order ensured CSK never had a clean window to slow the game down.

  • Devdutt Padikkal laid the foundation with a fluent 50 off 29 deliveries.
  • Tim David then launched the late surge, finishing unbeaten on 70 from just 25 balls.
  • Rajat Patidar followed through with an unbeaten 48 off 19 balls.

That combined effort propelled RCB to 250/3, which also became the highest team score in IPL 2026. In response, CSK struggled to cope with the scoreboard pressure, managing only scattered resistance as the top order faltered.

  • Sarfaraz Khan provided the main push with a 50 off 24 balls.
  • Prashant Veer contributed 43, but it was not enough to change the momentum.

Bhuvneshwar’s spell puts CSK under siege as RCB win again

Bhuvneshwar Kumar delivered a strike-changing spell of 3/41, which arrived after RCB’s batting had already set a formidable base. The fast bowler remained relentless throughout and even crossed the 200-wicket mark in IPL milestones, as RCB ensured CSK were dismissed for 207 in 19.4 overs.

The result capped a remarkable run of dominance: RCB registered their fourth straight win over CSK in IPL history for the first time ever.

How the chase unfolded

CSK’s chase began in disarray. Jacob Duffy struck early by removing Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Bhuvneshwar followed up by claiming his 200th IPL wicket, dismissing Ayush Mhatre cheaply.

After Duffy accounted for Sanju Samson, Sarfaraz Khan tried to flip the contest with a burst of boundaries and sixes off Duffy, Bhuvneshwar and Abhinandan Singh, reaching a half-century from only 24 balls. However, the innings tilted again when Sarfaraz was out to Krunal Pandya, who also dismissed Kartik Sharma, leaving CSK tottering at 84/5 in the seventh over.

Shivam Dube’s stay at the crease was brief, as Abhinandan ended his vigil. Then Veer and Jamie Overton attempted to rebuild, putting together a spirited 57-run partnership. Veer made 43 from 29 balls and Overton hammered 37 from 16, but both were removed—Veer fell to Bhuvneshwar and Overton was dismissed by Suyash Sharma.

Noor Ahmad and Anshul Kamboj managed a few more boundaries, yet Bhuvneshwar and Abhinandan ensured the chase never gained traction, wrapping up a convincing victory for RCB.
