DC Choose Vipraj Nigam as Ngidi’s Concussion Substitute vs PBKS, Chameera Dropped

Delhi Capitals were unable to use Dushmantha Chameera as a concussion replacement for Lungi Ngidi during their IPL 2026 meeting with Punjab Kings, with the decision coming down to the league’s overseas-player limits. Ngidi was ruled out after suffering a head injury at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Saturday, and Delhi subsequently opted for Vipraj Nigam instead of bringing in the Sri Lankan pacer.

How the concussion call played out

  1. Lungi Ngidi sustained a head knock while attempting to complete a catch off Punjab Kings opener Priyansh Arya during the match.
  2. After the incident, Ngidi had to leave the field immediately and was transported to hospital via ambulance.
  3. Delhi Capitals initially faced the prospect of naming Dushmantha Chameera as the concussion substitute.
  4. However, Venugopal Rao, the franchise’s director of cricket, explained that the playing XI already contained four overseas players, which is the maximum permitted under IPL regulations.
  5. Because concussion substitutes are also required to comply with the same overseas-player rule, Chameera could not be added without exceeding the overseas quota.
  6. Delhi therefore brought in Vipraj Nigam as the replacement instead of the like-for-like fast-bowling option.
  7. Rao also pointed out an additional constraint: Delhi had already used Auqib Nabi as their Impact Player during the match, narrowing the remaining bowling replacement choices.
  8. Within the remaining squad of 15, Vipraj was the only available option who could bowl, despite his role being that of a spinner rather than a pace bowler.

Venugopal Rao summed up the restriction clearly at the post-match press conference: only four overseas players can be included, and Delhi could not register a fifth overseas player under the tournament rules.

Ngidi’s injury details

The injury occurred in the second over of the game. Ngidi was trying to deal with a mishit from Priyansh Arya off Axar Patel’s bowling on the third ball of the over. He misread the ball’s trajectory, went airborne with his right hand extended, and the ball slipped past his reach while he landed awkwardly. The South African pacer struck the ground with the back of his head and immediately showed signs of pain as medical staff rushed in with a stretcher.

Ngidi was later taken to hospital in an ambulance, and Delhi Traffic Police arranged a green corridor to help the vehicle move quickly through traffic. The IPL subsequently confirmed that Ngidi was stable and expected to be discharged shortly.

Match recap: Delhi’s 264/2 and Punjab’s successful chase

With Delhi opting to bat first, the innings was shaped by a productive second-wicket partnership worth 220 runs between KL Rahul and Nitish Rana. Rahul played a commanding knock of 152 off 67 balls, striking 16 fours and nine sixes, while Rana contributed 91 off 44 deliveries with 11 fours and four sixes. That thrust propelled Delhi Capitals to 264/2.

Punjab Kings matched the tempo in reply, with Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran accelerating aggressively during the powerplay. Together they added 116 runs, with Arya scoring 43 off 17 balls featuring two boundaries and five maximums, and Prabhsimran striking 76 off 26 balls including nine fours and five sixes.

As the chase progressed, Shreyas stitched further partnerships, scoring 71 off 36 balls with three fours and seven sixes. He combined with Nehal Wadhera (25) and Shashank Singh (19) to keep the required rate under control, and Punjab Kings finished the pursuit in 18.5 overs with six wickets in hand.
