Lungi Ngidi Updates: Head Injury After Catch, Hospital Discharge Soon

Heartbreaking scenes unfolded at Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi during the Delhi Capitals vs Punjab Kings match on Saturday, April 25. Lungi Ngidi suffered a serious head injury while trying to complete a catch as he moved backward from mid-off.

Play was halted as medical staff rushed in. An ambulance was called and Ngidi was taken off for hospital assessment due to the severity of the impact. After about an hour and a half, the IPL issued an update confirming the South African pacer was in stable condition and expected to be discharged soon.

Quick facts

  • Date and venue: Saturday, April 25, at Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi
  • Player injured: Lungi Ngidi (head injury during a catch attempt from mid-off)
  • Immediate response: ambulance summoned; physios attended him on the field
  • Status update: IPL confirmed he was stable about 1.5 hours later
  • Hospital reason: after complaining of headache and neck pain following the fall
  • Concussion substitute: Vipraj Nigam
  • Why not Dushmantha Chameera: Delhi Capitals had already used four overseas players in their starting XI
  • Post-match explanation: Director of Cricket Venugopal Rao said DC “missed his four overs”

The incident began in the third over when Priyansh Arya misjudged an Axar Patel delivery. Ngidi reached out as the ball went past, but he failed to make contact and instead tumbled backward. His head struck the ground and he immediately grabbed it in pain, prompting an extended stoppage while treatment was administered.

Ngidi remained on the field as the medical team continued their assessment. A stretcher was brought out, and both squads watched with concern as he was carefully shifted onto it and then transferred to the ambulance for scans at the hospital.

Vipraj Nigam came in as the concussion substitute – why? During the same window when Ngidi was receiving care, Sri Lanka pacer Dushmantha Chameera was being prepared as a like-for-like concussion replacement. However, it was not possible because Delhi Capitals had already named four overseas players in their starting XI, a constraint that affected who could be used in the concussion slot.

With Delhi needing to select from the substitutes listed through the impact player framework, the franchise brought in Vipraj Nigam instead. The decision meant the replacement was not a direct like-for-like option in the way Chameera would have been.

After the match, Delhi Capitals lost even though they posted the highest total of IPL 2026. Director of Cricket Venugopal Rao later clarified the reason the team could not use Chameera, saying the situation was driven by the overseas-player availability rule. “Nobody wants to see this happen to a player but we missed his four overs,” Rao said.
