Narine’s Super Over brilliance and Rinku strike seal KKR’s Lucknow win

Kolkata Knight Riders produced a dramatic Super Over triumph over Lucknow Super Giants on Sunday in Lucknow, with both sides locked together on 155 after the 40-over contest. The game swung dramatically through the innings, but Sunil Narine delivered when it mattered most, turning the Super Over into a near-flawless execution under extreme pressure.

After the tie, Narine was handed the ball in the one-over shootout and struck immediately. He removed Nicholas Pooran with the first delivery, trapping him after the batter went for a slog sweep and missed a tossed-up off-break that crashed straight into the stumps. From there, the Super Over only grew more intense.

Rishabh Pant managed a run to keep the strike, but Narine found another breakthrough soon after, dismissing Aiden Markram. Markram tried to lift the ball over the infield, but the timing was way off, and a sharp piece of fielding work near the boundary ensured the danger was fully extinguished. Rovman Powell retrieved and returned the ball in the air before stepping back over the rope, allowing Rinku Singh to complete a decisive catch.

LSG were reeling at 1 for 2 in the Super Over. With only two runs required, Rinku Singh came in and finished the contest straight away, smashing Prince Yadav’s opening ball to the boundary. The result was the lowest total ever registered in an IPL Super Over, as LSG became the first team to exit the shootout after scoring just two runs.

The win capped a complete all-round display from Rinku Singh. Earlier in the match, he blasted an unbeaten 83 off 51 deliveries and also contributed four catches in the field. KKR’s innings had been kept afloat by his late thrust after Mohsin Khan had delivered a standout spell of 5 for 23.

Mohsin ripped through KKR’s batting order, striking down Ajinkya Rahane, Tim Seifert, Cameron Green, Rovman Powell, and Anukul Roy. The left-arm pacer’s control and variations on a slow black-soil surface left KKR struggling at multiple stages. Yet even as the innings unravelled, Rinku’s finish—highlighted by a brutal assault in the final over—pushed KKR to 155 for 7.

Rinku’s knock included confident strokes against both pace and spin, helping the team recover from a precarious position. Lucknow’s chase also featured brief periods of structure, especially when Rishabh Pant and Aiden Markram rebuilt after Mitchell Marsh’s early dismissal, stitching together a 57-run stand for the second wicket.

Still, both batters fell at critical moments. Pant was undone by a reverse scoop off Narine that went astray, while Markram was dismissed after a delivery from Cameron Green beat him for pace. After that, Lucknow lost momentum, though resistance from domestic batters kept them within reach for a while.

The final over brought further chaos. Kartik Tyagi conceded 16 runs and bowled two no-balls, including a waist-high delivery judged non-dangerous, which allowed him to continue. With the pressure mounting, Mohammed Shami struck for a six on the last ball to force the match into a Super Over.

The night also included a talking point involving Angkrish Raghuvanshi, who was controversially given out for obstructing the field following a review. The third umpire ruled that he had changed his running path while diving to get to his crease, leading to the decision.

In the end, KKR held their nerve in the Super Over, powered by Narine’s early breakthroughs and Rinku’s immediate finishing shot. The victory lifted KKR to eighth place on the table, while Lucknow dropped to the bottom after another narrow loss in a campaign that has repeatedly punished missed chances.
