Lucknow Super Giants and Kolkata Knight Riders produced a tense IPL 2026 encounter at the Ekana Cricket Stadium on Sunday, with Mohammed Shami’s late hitting forcing the match into a Super Over. However, the momentum that Shami generated in the final moments did not translate into victory, as KKR handled the tie-break with ease to seal a comfortable win. After batting first, LSG suffered an early wobble, losing two wickets for only a single run. Sunil Narine struck first by removing Nicholas Pooran, and Aiden Markram soon followed, leaving the home side under pressure as the chase of a defendable total began to look increasingly difficult. When KKR chased a target of two in the Super Over, the contest ended almost immediately—Rinku Singh struck a boundary on the very first ball to take the game away from LSG.
The disappointment of a win slipping away was evident on LSG captain Rishabh Pant during the post-match presentation. Pant was candid about the need for the group to own the outcome collectively, stressing that the responsibility cannot be placed on just a couple of individuals. He pointed to the emotional and mental demands of games like these and suggested that a short reset would help the squad regroup, manage pressure more effectively, and find solutions within the team rather than looking outward.
Chasing 156, LSG finished on 155, setting up the tie that Shami’s finishing touch created. Shami struck a six off the final ball of the innings, turning the late stages into a dramatic fightback, but it still wasn’t enough on the scoreboard to avoid the Super Over. After the defeat, Pant said the side needs a break to refresh its mindset and simplify its approach under pressure, adding that accountability must extend across the entire unit.
“I think we definitely need a break. I think we’re gonna refresh. There is always pressure, and it’s gonna be a pressure game always, but at the same time, we have to look for answers inside, not outside. And just keep it simple. We need to take accountability—every guy. Like, it can’t be about one or two guys. It has to be about the whole unit, and a lot of people will take accountability for that for sure,” Pant said.
Even after reaching the tie-break, Lucknow made a clear decision regarding personnel. LSG chose to send Nicholas Pooran into the Super Over despite his struggles in IPL 2026 so far. The left-hander has had a difficult run of form, with his best return across seven matches being only 22 runs from 25 balls. Pant explained that the decision followed discussion within the group, highlighting that trust is part of the process even when a player hasn’t found rhythm recently.
“We discussed as a group, we had a discussion, and the name that came up was Nicholas Pooran. He might not go through the best form of his life, but at the same time, you will trust your player in a hard situation like this,” Pant said.
While acknowledging the bitter nature of the result, Pant also made it clear that there were no excuses to hide behind. He suggested that while positivity may be hard to find immediately after a loss, the break could allow the team to return with renewed energy and clearer answers.
“No excuses there. Just looking at the positive, there might not be enough positive right now, but I think after the break, there will be a lot of enough positive for sure,” he said.
With the victory, KKR moved up to eighth place, collecting five points from eight matches. LSG, meanwhile, slid to the bottom of the IPL 2026 standings after failing to convert a near-perfect finish into a win. In the end, Shami’s late fireworks and LSG’s fightback delivered a Super Over, but KKR’s response ensured the tie-break belonged to them, leaving Lucknow to regroup after a painful loss.
