Pant Under Fire as LSG’s Captaincy Faces Calls After Fifth Straight Defeat

Rishabh Pant’s reign as Lucknow Super Giants captain has run into yet another difficult spell, following a defeat to Kolkata Knight Riders that went down to a Super Over. LSG fell short of a target of 156, extending a grim stretch that now includes five consecutive losses in the season. Their situation at home is even more worrying, with eight straight defeats at their own venue under Pant since last year. In total, LSG have lost 14 of their last 22 matches during his captaincy.

Wasim Jaffer calls for a leadership rethink

Former India batter Wasim Jaffer believes the franchise needs to consider a change at the top to stabilise performances. He argued that Aiden Markram should be given the captaincy role and went further by outlining a batting structure he would prefer for LSG.

Jaffer also linked Pant’s struggles as a leader to what he sees as a decline in his batting output. Since last season, Pant has managed 458 runs across 21 innings, including only three half-centuries. Even in the most recent match, his knock of 42 fell short of being enough to drag the team over the line.

In a detailed assessment, Jaffer said Pant is at his best when he is not weighed down with captaincy responsibilities. “I feel a player like Rishabh Pant should play purely as a player. You unlock the best version of him when you remove the extra burden and simply let him go out and win matches on his own. Don’t load him with captaincy,” Jaffer said on his YouTube channel.

He added that Markram, in his view, is better equipped to handle the role. “I think Aiden Markram is a better captain. He has captained South Africa successfully, he is mentally strong, and he is very composed. I believe he could get the most out of the other players,” Jaffer said, while stressing that such a change may not happen. “This is only my suggestion, but if I were in that position, that’s what I would do.”

Jaffer’s criticism extended beyond the captaincy issue to the team’s overall identity and execution. “LSG look completely out of place right now, and it’s difficult to even guess what to expect from them,” he said. “If I were in that dugout, the very first thing I would do is make Aiden Markram the captain. That would be my top priority.”

He then explained how he would set the lineup. “That would be my top seven, and I would go with this batting order,” Jaffer added.

LSG will now be under pressure to arrest the slide, particularly with their home record under Pant continuing to deteriorate. With match-to-match results proving hard to come by, the captaincy debate has once again become a central talking point around the franchise.
