Ahead of RCB’s meeting with Delhi Capitals, batting coach Dinesh Karthik offered high praise for the way Kohli keeps refining his game year after year. Karthik said Kohli constantly finds ways to “rediscovers” his batting approach as seasons move on, even as new faces and faster strike rates become the norm.
“Credit to him, that man constantly rediscovers with every passing year,” Karthik said. “And for him to keep up with the pace of this game, and some of the newer players are batting at insane strike rates, and he is going shoulder to shoulder with them and producing match-winning performances. So I marvel at how he rediscovers himself every year, almost.”
Method, discipline and a lesson for the squad
Karthik also pointed to Kohli’s preparation routine and the discipline that underpins it. He stressed that Kohli’s process does not begin and end on match day, but starts earlier, with him reviewing what he has done and building a stubborn, clear plan for how he wants to execute his batting.
“That man goes back every year, and he is assessing what he has done,” Karthik added. “And he almost comes with a very stubborn plan about how he wants to go about it. And he gets it done not on match days alone but the way he practises as well. And he has a method to how he goes about it and he’s constantly checking himself in practise.”
He further suggested that Kohli’s rhythm in this IPL 2026 campaign has become a learning blueprint for younger players in the squad. Karthik noted that Kohli varies his workload session to session and uses his experience to keep his preparation sharp, while still giving younger teammates a clear view of professionalism at work.
“And there are certain days he’ll bat more, certain days he’ll bat less. And he has so much experience,” Karthik said. “And it’s quite amazing and a learning experience for any young boy watching. As a young player, when you watch somebody like Virat Kohli practise, I think it is, first of all, they’re lucky, and at the same time, it is such a learning experience even though they’ve not got game time. Looking at somebody like Virat Kohli closely and seeing how serious he is about his practise and how he has a plan when he does practise.”
With 11 runs standing between Kohli and a historic 9,000-run milestone, RCB’s clash against Delhi Capitals is poised to bring another defining chapter in a season already shaped by his relentless run-making.
