NEW DELHI: League leaders Punjab Kings received a significant lift for their bowling plans with the arrival of Lockie Ferguson as they faced Rajasthan Royals in a high-stakes Indian Premier League 2026 match on Tuesday. The encounter took place at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, with Punjab arriving as the side sitting at the top of the standings.
Rajasthan skipper Riyan Parag won the toss and chose to field first, pointing to a touch of early dampness linked to recent rain along with cloud cover in the lead-up to play. With the ball expected to grip a little more at the start, Parag believed the Royals could create an opening spell.
Ferguson added as Punjab chase pace edge
There was plenty of attention on Punjab’s XI as they named express pacer Ferguson in place of Xavier Bartlett, a move that underlined their intention to sharpen their pace bowling. Ferguson’s raw pace is expected to be especially impactful in the early overs, particularly if the pitch and conditions offer assistance to seamers.
Punjab also had a forced swap in their batting line-up, with Suryansh Shedge coming in for Shashank Singh. The hosts, buoyed by their unbeaten run this season, will look to make the most of the new-ball phase and set the tone early.
Captain Shreyas Iyer acknowledged that he would have preferred to bowl first, but said the group remained comfortable with any scenario. “No matter whether you’re batting or bowling, it’s always a tough challenge. We’re all proactive regardless of what the toss brings,” Iyer said.
On the topic of consistency and standards, Iyer added, “We’ve got a specific target to reach, and we know what the bigger goal is. Our focus is on keeping our levels high and our values intact. It’s been brilliant so far, and we need to carry that momentum forward.”
Punjab enter the fixture as the only side still unbeaten in the ongoing campaign, and they will be keen to strengthen their hold on the top spot with another strong showing.
Royals aim to cash in on early moisture
From Rajasthan’s perspective, Parag stressed the value of striking in the first phase of the innings. “There’s a bit of moisture at the start, so we’re aiming to use that and pick up a few early wickets,” he said, highlighting the Royals’ plan to exploit the conditions early.
The Royals made two changes in their playing combination. Dasun Shanaka was selected for Shimron Hetmyer, while Yash Punja was named in place of Ravi Bishnoi.
Rajasthan are currently placed fourth in the table and can move up with a win. However, they face a Punjab unit that is riding a wave of confidence and recent momentum.
With Ferguson’s pace complementing a bowling group that already includes Arshdeep Singh and Marco Jansen, Punjab will look to break partnerships quickly and extend their dominant run in IPL 2026.
