Rain Threat at Eden Gardens: KKR vs PBKS IPL 2026 Match Could Be Washed Out

Kolkata Knight Riders’ hunt for their maiden victory of IPL 2026 may hit a significant roadblock, with rain forecast to disrupt their meeting with Punjab Kings at Eden Gardens on Monday. The India Meteorological Department has indicated a high likelihood of showers affecting the match, with the prospect of a reduced contest—or even a complete washout—looming over the fixture.

KKR, still searching for their first win of the season, are already under pressure, and unsettled conditions could make their early campaign even tougher. Their next outing at the same venue against Lucknow Super Giants is also flagged for rain risk, suggesting a difficult stretch for the franchise if the weather does not clear.

There is an added twist to the situation: when KKR faced Punjab Kings in the previous season, that game was also interrupted by rain. Punjab Kings had posted 201/4 before KKR reached 7/0, but the match ended with the sides sharing a point after the encounter was abandoned.

IMD Forecast Points to Kalbaishakhi Threat

The IMD has linked the unstable weather to a low-pressure trough running from Bihar to Manipur, cutting across North Bengal, Assam, and Bangladesh. Officials expect another round of Kalbaishakhi storms, with hail and thunderstorms possible from Sunday through Thursday. The agency also noted that the intensity and coverage of rainfall are expected to rise most on Tuesday and Wednesday.

In its update, the IMD warned that conditions may turn sharper on Tuesday, when Kalbaishakhi storms could bring winds of 50–60 kmph along with lightning and rain over Kolkata and nearby areas. Even ahead of the match, persistent cloud cover and downpours have already disrupted preparations, with both teams’ practice sessions on the eve of the game cancelled due to the rainfall. At Eden Gardens, the outfield remained covered, and water patches were visible.

Result Possible Only If Play Starts Early

With rain a live concern, match officials will have a limited window to force a result. A minimum five-overs-a-side game can be scheduled only if the match begins by 10:56 pm, and the toss must be conducted no later than 10:46 pm. If a shortened contest does get underway, it is likely to turn into a fast-paced, high-pressure batting affair, with teams that go on the attack early gaining an edge.

Should play fail to start within the required timeframe, the fixture will be abandoned, meaning both sides will share a point. Punjab Kings will aim to maintain momentum from their start, while KKR will be desperate to open their account with a first win. Still, with the forecast hovering over Eden Gardens, the final outcome may hinge more on weather conditions than on either team’s plans.
