JAIPUR: Rajasthan Royals are facing fresh scrutiny for a potential breach of disciplinary norms, coming only a few days after their team manager was reprimanded for using a mobile phone from the dugout. This time, the focus has shifted to captain Riyan Parag, after broadcast footage from Tuesday night’s match against Punjab Kings in New Chandigarh appeared to show him vaping inside the team’s dressing room.
The incident was captured during the 16th over of the second innings, with Rajasthan chasing a target of 223. As the television feed turned toward the dressing area for reaction shots, Parag was seen taking a puff from what looked like an electronic cigarette. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel were also visible nearby in the same area of the frame.
Even though the Royals ultimately sealed a six-wicket win, the outcome was quickly eclipsed by online and on-ground debate about their captain’s off-field behaviour. The discussion intensified because the broadcast delivered clear visuals to a large audience in a match setting watched in real time across the league.
In India, the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act, 2019 outlaws the manufacture, sale, distribution, storage, and advertising of vapes. The law also provides for penalties that may include fines, and in some situations, imprisonment of up to six months for offences connected to storage. While prosecutions over private, personal use are uncommon, the public nature of a live IPL broadcast has made the episode harder to ignore.
It is understood that BCCI officials are reviewing the footage. There are indications that the matter may be handled under the IPL code of conduct. A team-linked source noted, “There is no specific punishment listed in the IPL code of conduct. The BCCI will be seeking legal guidance.”
Meanwhile, Royals sources said there has been no direct communication from the BCCI so far. They added that coach Kumar Sangakkara spoke with Riyan about the incident after the match.
