Riyan Parag Vaping Clip Sparks Royals Culture Debate Ahead of IPL 2026

Rajasthan Royals have found themselves in an unwelcome off-field storm after captain Riyan Parag was seen vaping in the dressing room. With the clip making its way onto social media, debate about Parag’s conduct and the wider standards within the Royals setup has largely eclipsed the team’s on-field work.

Quick facts

  • Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag was caught vaping in the dressing room.
  • Kumar Sangakkara said the situation is a “reminder” for players about protecting team culture.
  • The BCCI fined Parag 25% of his match fee and issued one demerit point for a “Level 1 offence”.
  • A disciplinary process has also been initiated, with stronger action expected later.
  • Rajasthan Royals are scheduled to play Delhi Capitals in Jaipur on May 1.
  • RR were 4th in the points table with 6 wins from 9 matches.

Royals head coach Kumar Sangakkara addressed the controversy, stressing that leadership demands more than just performance—it also requires upholding the dressing-room culture. He framed his comments as a prompt to players that the standards of the group must be maintained, particularly for those who set the tone as leaders.

At the same time, Sangakkara urged that attention should move away from the matter because both the franchise and the BCCI have already taken steps. He said such incidents do not benefit the team and pointed to the fact that the issues are being dealt with through official channels.

Speaking ahead of RR’s game versus Delhi Capitals, Sangakkara reiterated that the matter has been handled by the board and the franchise, and that it should serve as a lesson rather than a distraction. The coach’s message was clear: culture inside the squad is non-negotiable.

BCCI action and disciplinary next steps

Earlier, the BCCI imposed a fine on Parag, deducting 25% of his match fee. The board also awarded a single demerit point, describing the incident as a “Level 1 offence”.

Alongside the initial punishment, the BCCI also began a disciplinary proceeding, indicating that additional and potentially harsher consequences may follow after further review. The board further stated that it is looking at other ways to pursue stringent action involving not only the player involved, but also the team, its officials, and any relevant parties—aimed at protecting the IPL’s reputation.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia also commented on the issue, confirming that the board’s work is not finished. He said the board is still exploring what further action can be taken on the team, and that a final decision has not been reached.

Where RR stand ahead of the Delhi clash

Despite the noise off the field, Rajasthan’s campaign remains on track in the standings. The franchise sits 4th in the points table, having won 6 of their first 9 matches.

Rajasthan Royals will return to action on May 1 when they take on Delhi Capitals in Jaipur, with the focus now expected to shift back toward the result—after a week dominated by controversy.
