Sooryavanshi left dejected as Jamieson fires up; Starc’s big wait continues

The Rajasthan Royals vs Delhi Capitals IPL showdown at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on Friday was marketed as a clash between Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Mitchell Starc. With Sooryavanshi’s reputation as an exciting young talent and Starc having already struck earlier—finishing off Jasprit Bumrah, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins—many expected the left-arm pacer to get his first test against the 15-year-old. Instead, Sooryavanshi’s night ended almost instantly, lasting only two deliveries before Kyle Jamieson sent him back to the dressing room.

Sooryavanshi’s two-ball dismissal turns the tone

Sooryavanshi began with intent and punished the first ball he faced by smashing it for a boundary. But he was unable to build on that start, losing his wicket on the very next ball.

Jamieson bowled a low, dipping full toss. The left-handed batter, staying back in his crease to reach the ball, went for the dig-out. However, it arrived with an under-edge and the ball trickled off the back pad onto the stumps. The impact rattled the wicket and immediately lifted Delhi’s energy, while Sooryavanshi walked off with a frustrated look after managing only four runs.

Jamieson underlined the breakthrough with a fiery celebration, running his moment right in front of the youngster as he made his way back.

How the match started: toss, batting call and early strikes

The Rajasthan Royals began the contest after Riyan Parag won the toss and chose to bat first. Despite the decision, the hosts struggled early.

In the opening over, Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed by Mitchell Starc, leaving Rajasthan chasing momentum from the outset. When Sooryavanshi came in, he did not even get an over’s worth of time against Starc—his spell began and ended without a ball being faced, as the first six deliveries were dealt with by Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel.

Rajasthan’s difficulties increased in the next over when Sooryavanshi lost his wicket to Kyle Jamieson, a blow Delhi would have been particularly pleased with given the form the teenager has shown during IPL 2026. Earlier in the season, he had become the fastest batter to cross 400 runs in a single edition, measured by balls faced.

What Parag said at the toss, plus team updates

Speaking after the toss, Parag explained that his choice to bat first was shaped by conditions at the venue. He suggested the surface looked drier than usual and expected it to slow down as the match progressed.

  • Parag said Rajasthan would bat first, pointing out it was “not the usual Jaipur wicket,” with the pitch playing drier than expected.
  • He noted that the previous day’s action suggested the track had been quicker earlier, and hoped it would become slower in the later stages.
  • Parag also referenced the team’s broader approach, saying everyone had to step up and that Rajasthan would aim to tighten up their performance over the full 40 overs.
  • He added that a strong showing on the day could allow the side to rest for a few days afterward as the tournament moves into its business end.

For the Jaipur fixture, the Royals made two alterations to their XI. Delhi, meanwhile, also changed their lineup, bringing in Pathum Nissanka, Mitchell Starc and Ashutosh Shama into the playing group.
