Mitchell McClenaghan has explained why Kyle Jamieson’s fiery celebration after striking early in the IPL 2026 meeting between Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals in Jaipur stood out, while also praising the way Mitchell Starc turned in a decisive spell even without being at his very best. Speaking on JioHotstar after the Royals’ seven-wicket triumph over the Capitals, McClenaghan said Jamieson’s reaction was shaped by the pressure of the moment and the emotions that come with removing a batter who had been in command throughout the ongoing tournament.
The key incident unfolded in the second over of Rajasthan’s innings. Jamieson celebrated after dismissing Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, and McClenaghan pointed to the “big moment” factor—especially because Sooryavanshi had been causing problems for bowlers across the competition. “When you’re up against a young batter who has been dominating bowlers throughout the tournament, getting his wicket early brings that natural reaction,” he said. In the same breath, he added that the reaction also carried a distinct Kiwi edge, noting how intensity and surprise often surface when a breakthrough arrives earlier than expected.
Later, IPL confirmed that Jamieson received one demerit point and was warned for breaching Level 1 of the IPL Code of Conduct during the match at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium. The league cited that Jamieson was too close to Sooryavanshi in an aggressive manner, with the potential to provoke an equally hostile response from the batter. McClenaghan, though, framed the celebration as being born from adrenaline and the match’s critical swing point. “There’s a bit of Kiwi flair in it as well, being fired up in a key moment. And to be fair, when you go in expecting to be under pressure and instead get the breakthrough quickly, that surprise and intensity often comes out in the celebration,” he said.
Turning to Starc’s role, McClenaghan highlighted how the Australian pacer can impact a game quickly, even when he isn’t immediately at peak form. He described Starc as a bowler who brings the feel of a match-winner as soon as he starts bowling, adding that elite pace talent typically needs only a handful of deliveries to find rhythm. “Mitchell Starc brings that presence of a proven match-winner, and even if he’s not at his absolute peak straight away, his quality shows very quickly. Like other elite bowlers, he just needs a few deliveries to find his rhythm, and once he does, you can see the pace and execution come through,” McClenaghan said.
Starc, playing his first IPL 2026 fixture after recovering from injury, produced a three-wicket haul and played a major part in Delhi Capitals keeping the contest firmly in their control at key stages—despite the final outcome going in Rajasthan’s favour. McClenaghan also underlined the value of having a bowler who can attack the right lengths and hit crucial areas when batters are trying to settle. “Bowling in the mid-140s and hitting those key areas makes a big difference. For Delhi Capitals, having someone like him is invaluable, a bowler you can rely on in crucial moments and expect a breakthrough when it matters most,” he added.
Rajasthan ultimately chased down the target successfully, completing a record 226-run chase—the highest total successfully pursued in IPL history—by winning the match by seven wickets. The chase was anchored by a 110-run opening partnership between KL Rahul and Pathum Nissanka, which gave the Royals a strong platform before Tristan Stubbs and Ashutosh Sharma brought the job home with five balls remaining.
Earlier in the match, Rajasthan had posted 225/6, powered by Riyan Parag’s 90 and Donovan Ferreira’s unbeaten 47. Starc responded for Delhi with three wickets, but it was not enough to stop Rajasthan from reaching the target. For Delhi Capitals, the defeat left them with four wins from the season, placing them sixth in the standings, while Rajasthan Royals remained fourth.
