Punjab Kings’ unbeaten momentum has come to an end, and they will now aim to stop that setback from becoming a bigger slide when they host Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League in Ahmedabad on Sunday. Gujarat enter the contest with the confidence of a second straight success and will be looking to make it a third win in a row.
Earlier this week, Punjab Kings suffered their first defeat of the season, losing to Rajasthan Royals in what proved a painful reversal after a strong start. Even with that loss, Punjab remain top of the table, holding 13 points from eight matches. Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals sit just one point behind.
For a side that had raced out of the blocks with six consecutive victories, the defeat has raised a few questions, particularly about the bowling end. While Punjab’s batting has repeatedly delivered, it has sometimes served as a shield for the bowling unit’s inconsistencies.
Even in their wins, Punjab’s bowlers have at times permitted opponents to score freely during key phases, and the most recent result once again highlighted those vulnerabilities. The added pressure of not being able to finish innings has also impacted their batters, who have often been pushed into chasing larger totals or defending scores that end up looking below par.
As the tournament moves into a sharper, more competitive stretch, Punjab will need cleaner execution and more defined plans—especially when facing a Gujarat top order that plays with confidence once it gains momentum. Their fielding has also been an area of concern, with dropped chances and misfields hurting them at crucial moments.
Despite those issues, Punjab’s batting remains their most reliable asset. Openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh have been providing steady starts, while Cooper Connolly has contributed with runs as well. The middle order, guided by skipper Shreyas Iyer, has shown enough depth to either build demanding totals or manage successful chases.
Gujarat Titans, meanwhile, arrive on the back of two straight wins, even though their season overall has followed a stop-start pattern. The recent victories over Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru have helped them move into the top half of the standings.
With those back-to-back wins, the Titans are currently fifth in the points table, having collected 10 points. Their batting success has largely been driven by their top three—Sai Sudharsan, captain Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler—but there is also a lingering concern that the team can become overly dependent on that trio.
Washington Sundar has offered encouraging signs in the middle overs, but impact from the finishers has not been as consistent. Shahrukh Khan and Rahul Tewatia are yet to consistently deliver match-defining contributions at the end of innings.
Jason Holder has also been brought into the middle order to strengthen balance, and his value was visible in the win against defending champions RCB. The West Indian contributed with both bat and ball, taking two wickets for 29 runs from his four overs and holding three catches, underlining his usefulness across departments.
Another positive takeaway for Gujarat has been their bowling in the most recent match. Their attack looked more controlled and disciplined, with better management of lengths and improved execution during key phases, as they restricted RCB to 155—an under-par total—by bowling them out.
