The Chennai Super Kings vs Mumbai Indians game at the Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday delivered another reminder of how quickly IPL can turn raw promise into headline performances. With the spotlight on India’s depth of talent, wicketkeeper-batter Kartik Sharma made a statement that felt made for the league.
Quick facts
- Kartik Sharma turned 20 last month and has a reputation as a “serial six-hitter.”
- He was bought by CSK for ₹14.2 crore from the auction pool.
- This season marked his IPL debut and he has played six matches so far.
- Against Mumbai Indians, Kartik scored 54 not out off 40 balls.
- CSK’s win came with captain Ruturaj Gaikwad involved in the chase.
- It was Kartik’s first half-century in the IPL.
Sharma, who plays for Rajasthan, has already shown his power game repeatedly in domestic competitions including the Ranji Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Even so, the price tag CSK paid—₹14.2 crore—raised eyebrows for a young player. His innings against Mumbai offered a clear answer to that debate.
Kartik’s match-winning knock was a composed 54* off 40 balls, helping CSK secure a comfortable victory alongside Ruturaj Gaikwad. The 50-plus score also represented a personal milestone, with it being his maiden fifty in IPL cricket.
After the chase, Kartik explained the thinking behind his approach and spoke about how Ruturaj helped him stay steady through the pursuit. “I was just thinking that I have to stay there till the end and finish the game for the team,” he said.
He added that his captain’s message was simple and actionable. “Rutu bhayya just told me to play the game that I know. Nothing else. Just go there, play your game and help the team win,” Kartik said, also noting the celebration he carried out after reaching his fifty.
Asked about the emotion of the moment, Kartik revealed it had been planned. “I had planned beforehand that if I scored runs today, I would celebrate like that,” he said, describing a celebration that involved a pointed display.
Ruturaj and Hussey on Kartik’s skill set
Ruturaj Gaikwad was impressed not only with the hitting but with the control behind it. The CSK captain said Kartik’s game goes beyond sixes and framed his batting as a balance of selection and timing rather than reckless slogging.
“Obviously, a good confidence-booster for him and for us as well. I feel, yes, he is a six-hitter, but I feel he has the other game as well,” Ruturaj said. He further stressed that Kartik understands how to choose the right bowlers and the right types of deliveries instead of going after everything.
Ruturaj elaborated that CSK believe the impact can be especially valuable from the number four spot, where a specific kind of control can provide the team with structure. “So he’s someone who picks and chooses his bowlers, picks and chooses his particular type of deliveries or particular type of bowlers,” he said. “So he’s someone we thought, from the last game, coming in at number four can give us that balance.”
He also referenced a belief shared by CSK’s former star, Michael Hussey, commonly called “Mr Cricket.” “As Mr Cricket [Michael Hussey] said, the other day, that he’s someone who once gets going, he’s gonna be giving us a lot more years,” Ruturaj added.
Earlier in the build-up to the match, Hussey had already spoken about Kartik in high praise as CSK’s batting coach. He said the franchise sees a long future for the youngster, pointing to both talent and mindset.
Hussey described Kartik as a player with the attitude CSK wants and the ambition to perform beyond the league. “I think he’s a great talent and am really excited about the future for Kartik. I hope we can see him here at CSK for the next five to ten years. He’s got a great attitude towards the game, he trains really well, he’s very ambitious, he wants to do well not just in the IPL but he wants to play for India,” the Aussie said.
