Nishant Sindhu Gets First IPL Chance as Gujarat Titans Name Him vs Punjab

Gujarat Titans gave their maiden IPL opportunity to emerging all-rounder Nishant Sindhu during their Sunday encounter with Punjab Kings at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Titans captain Shubman Gill revealed the call at the toss, choosing to field first after naming Sindhu in the playing XI.

Why Gujarat made the change

Gill explained that the side’s recent performances while chasing had been encouraging, and that they wanted to stay anchored in that momentum. “We’ve been chasing well in the past few games, so we’ll continue with the momentum,” he said. He also highlighted how crucial it is for the team to close out tightly contested matches, pointing to Rahul Tewatia’s influence in their previous outing as an example of finishing well.

With the match surface potentially offering early assistance to the bowlers, Gill stressed the importance of getting the best out of their skills from the start. He added that Gujarat’s larger focus is on ensuring their peak form arrives at the right moment in the tournament. “I think it’s all about peaking at the right time, and I feel our best game is yet to come. Nishant Sindhu makes his debut,” Gill confirmed.

Nishant Sindhu: the path to IPL

Sindhu, hailing from Haryana, is a left-handed batter who also delivers slow left-arm orthodox bowling. His rise began in the 2018-19 U-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy, where he produced a major all-round showing—scoring 572 runs and taking 23 wickets—to play a key role in Haryana securing the title.

He then stepped up through the junior international ranks, featuring in India’s successful group at the 2022 ICC Under-19 World Cup. Across the tournament, Sindhu contributed with both bat and ball, taking six wickets in five matches while also making a valuable half-century.

At domestic level, he made his first-class debut in the 2022 Ranji Trophy. He went on to appear in both the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy. His steady output earned him IPL contracts with Chennai Super Kings for the 2023 and 2024 seasons, though he didn’t receive a chance to play in those campaigns.
