NEW DELHI: Gujarat Titans opener Sai Sudharsan has kept his rapid climb in the IPL firmly on track, rewriting the tournament’s record ledger once again by moving past Chris Gayle for the most runs after 50 matches in the competition’s history. The 24-year-old reached the milestone during Gujarat’s last-over triumph over Punjab Kings at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, striking a composed 57 off 41 balls to push his cumulative total to 2,178 runs in his first 50 IPL innings. In doing so, he surpassed Gayle’s earlier benchmark of 2,061 runs, a record that had endured for 13 years and dated back to a time when Sudharsan was only 11 years old.
Mitchell Marsh sits third on the same exclusive list with 1,933 runs after 50 innings, highlighting how steep Sudharsan’s jump has been in a format where short bursts of brilliance can quickly swing outcomes.
Fastest to 2000 — Gayle benchmark toppled again
This breakthrough is not the only Gayle-related milestone Sudharsan has disrupted this season. Earlier, the stylish left-hander became the quickest batter in IPL history to reach 2,000 runs, hitting the mark in 47 innings—one fewer than Gayle’s 48. Marsh is next in line behind him, having taken 52 innings to get there.
Sudharsan’s record run began even earlier in the season when he produced a sensational 100 off 58 balls against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, a knock that underlined his ability to impose himself on different opponents and conditions while maintaining consistency.
Recovery after a shaky start, then a late-season surge
Despite a slow beginning to IPL 2026—where he managed just one fifty in his first six appearances—Sudharsan has responded with intent. He has produced three scores of fifty-plus in his most recent four innings, including the century that helped swing the momentum firmly back in his favour.
His overall output is striking: 2,178 runs from 50 innings at an average of 47.34, along with a strike rate of 148. All of those runs have come for Gujarat Titans since his IPL debut in 2022.
Punjab Kings chase — Gujarat’s bowlers set it up, Sudharsan finished it
- As Sudharsan carried the batting load with a 57 off 41, Gujarat Titans built the groundwork with the ball to keep Punjab Kings under pressure.
- Jason Holder led the charge for GT, taking four wickets, while Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada contributed two scalps each.
- Punjab Kings, kept battling throughout, reached 163/9 thanks to a determined half-century from Suryansh Shedge.
- Gujarat Titans then chased the target down on the penultimate ball, sealing a dramatic victory, with Sudharsan again central to the story.
With the win and the record-breaking numbers that came with it, Sudharsan’s IPL momentum shows no sign of slowing—continuing a season-long pattern of stepping into the biggest moments and rewriting what seemed previously untouchable.
