MI Plot to Curb Vaibhav Sooryavanshi as Royals’ 15-Year-Old Turns Heads

The conversation around the Indian Premier League 2026 has quickly centred on Rajasthan Royals teenager Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, whose early performances have set off plenty of debate despite his age. The left-handed batter, just 15, was widely expected to face a steep learning curve in the tournament’s 19th season, particularly because this would be only his second campaign at the top level. Yet, through the first two fixtures, the start hasn’t quite matched the hype: Sooryavanshi has managed scores of 52 and 31 against Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans respectively. That said, the next outing may be the real test of his temperament, with Rajasthan set to lock horns with Mumbai Indians at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati on Tuesday, April 7, where he will come up against Jasprit Bumrah.

Sooryavanshi’s challenge against Mumbai isn’t just about facing an elite fast bowler, but also about responding to pressure after a difficult run of form. In IPL 2025, he announced himself in spectacular fashion by smashing the quickest century by an Indian, taking just 35 balls to reach the landmark against Gujarat Titans. However, the promise didn’t carry over into every match. Against the five-time champions, he couldn’t get going and was dismissed for a duck off just two deliveries by Deepak Chahar. With that memory still fresh, Rajasthan will hope this talented youngster can turn his next opportunity into momentum.

After IPL 2025 concluded, Sooryavanshi didn’t slow down, continuing his run with the bat for India Under-19. He produced a tournament-defining knock of 175 from just 80 balls, a knock that helped India win the Under-19 World Cup. Those performances have kept him on the radar of franchises, and Mumbai Indians have taken note. Paras Mhambrey, the bowling coach at MI, made it clear that the team will map out a specific plan for the teenager, stressing that they understand his skill set and what he is capable of when he gets into rhythm.

Speaking ahead of the match in the pre-game media interaction on Monday, Mhambrey said, “Vaibhav isn’t new. It’s his second season. He has already had one year of experience. The way he has been batting, he has been performing well, and we know he’s a good player. So our preparation will be spot on.” He added, “We will prepare for him the same way we prepare for the other batters.”

For Mumbai, the bigger selection headline is a fitness update on their captain. Hardik Pandya, who missed the previous match against Delhi Capitals, is back and expected to take charge again. In Hardik’s absence, Suryakumar Yadav led the side, but Mumbai fell short against Delhi Capitals.

Mhambrey confirmed that the skipper’s unavailability was not due to a lingering injury. “Hardik will be available,” he said. “He had a couple of good hours in the nets session yesterday, so he’s fit and fine.” He further clarified, “Hardik wasn’t injured. He was unwell, and that is why he missed the previous game.”

With the squads lining up for the contest, the league context adds another layer. Rajasthan Royals have won their opening two matches, while Mumbai Indians have managed one victory and one defeat so far. The head-to-head record in the IPL also tilts slightly in Mumbai’s favour, with both sides having met 31 times—MI winning 16 and RR 14, with one match outcome not fitting neatly into either tally.
