Dinesh Karthik Credits Virat Kohli for RCB Batting Coach Role

Dinesh Karthik’s IPL journey has been defined by reinvention. After beginning his franchise career with Delhi Daredevils, he went on to represent Kings XI Punjab, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Gujarat Lions and Kolkata Knight Riders. The former India wicketkeeper-batter eventually wrapped up his IPL playing stint with RCB in IPL 2024—but his relationship with the Bengaluru side continued, with a new role as batting coach and mentor. Karthik has now detailed how Virat Kohli’s involvement and encouragement played a crucial part in his decision to take up the coaching path.

From player to batting coach at RCB

Karthik described how the transition began while he was still active in the competition. As he approached the end of his playing career in 2024, he said Mo—short for team director Mo—asked whether he would be interested in joining RCB in a coaching capacity. Karthik explained that it was a difficult period for the franchise, with the team enduring a rough run that saw them lose either six of seven or seven of eight matches (his memory was not exact), leaving them with a “mountain to climb.”

Despite the chaos of that season, Karthik insisted he was personally drawn to the idea. He said discussions were happening while he was still playing, and that he was also speaking about the possibility with his wife and Mo. He added that Malolan Rangarajan was another important influence during the process, sharing what the role could look like without forcing any rigid direction on him.

  • Karthik said Mo approached him during the middle-to-late stages of IPL 2024 with the question of whether he would consider the coaching/mentoring role.
  • He noted RCB’s challenging campaign at the time, describing a major struggle with results—either six defeats from seven games or seven defeats from eight.
  • He explained that he remained engaged in the conversations while still playing, and also discussed the idea with his family.
  • He credited Rangarajan with helping him visualise the role, saying the guidance was about showing possibilities rather than giving orders.

Why Virat Kohli’s encouragement mattered

While Mo’s confidence helped shape the conversation, Karthik said it was his repeated interactions with Virat Kohli that ultimately pushed him over the edge. He stated that Kohli spoke to him towards the back end of the season and delivered a message that was both simple and persuasive.

According to Karthik, when the offer came for him after he had “hung up” his boots, Mo called again to confirm that RCB were keen. Karthik added that Mo also mentioned Andy Flower’s positive reaction, and that the team felt bringing in a couple of Indian coaching staff would strengthen the setup.

Then came another exchange with Kohli. Karthik said Virat told him that he should take the opportunity and suggested it would be a good fit, framing it as a challenge worth embracing. Karthik added that respect from a player of Kohli’s stature mattered significantly in his final call.

  • Karthik said he spoke to Virat during the closing phase of IPL 2024, with Kohli encouraging him to consider the role.
  • He recalled that after his retirement from playing, Mo contacted him again and confirmed RCB’s interest.
  • Karthik said Mo also shared that Andy Flower was pleased with the plan and that RCB believed Indian coaching staff would add value.
  • He revealed Virat later told him he should do it and that he would likely fit in well, which Karthik said was all the reassurance he needed.

How RCB’s 2025 success shaped his perspective

Karthik also linked his decision-making to a broader sense of what RCB’s future could hold. He suggested that RCB’s triumph in IPL 2025 carries a weight similar to the 2007 T20 World Cup victory. He explained that he was part of the Indian team that won the inaugural T20 World Cup, placing that achievement high on his personal list.

When asked what the defining moment of his cricket career was, Karthik said the World Cup win naturally comes up first. However, he placed RCB’s title win close behind, arguing that it edges other major successes because of the patience required — emphasising that RCB waited 18 years to lift the trophy. He added that fans’ passion makes the moment feel like more than celebration, describing a sense of yearning and a feeling of “giving back” once the wait finally ends.

  1. Karthik said the 2007 T20 World Cup win remains a top highlight, as he was part of that squad.
  2. He argued that RCB’s 2025 IPL victory is also right up there, even ahead of other franchise milestones, because the club endured an 18-year wait.
  3. He said an IPL win as a player would be special too, but the RCB title “pips” it for him due to the long wait and the emotional connection with fans.
