Karthik explained that it was a difficult period for the franchise, with the team enduring a rough run that saw them lose either six of seven or seven of eight matches (his memory was not exact), leaving them with a “mountain to climb.”
Despite the chaos of that season, Karthik insisted he was personally drawn to the idea. He said discussions were happening while he was still playing, and that he was also speaking about the possibility with his wife and Mo. He added that Malolan Rangarajan was another important influence during the process, sharing what the role could look like without forcing any rigid direction on him.

Then came another exchange with Kohli. Karthik said Virat told him that he should take the opportunity and suggested it would be a good fit, framing it as a challenge worth embracing. Karthik added that respect from a player of Kohli’s stature mattered significantly in his final call.
