KKR Tosses In vs PBKS With Narine Unavailable, Varun Injured

Kolkata Knight Riders won the toss and chose to bat in their home match against Punjab Kings, but the decision came with a couple of major selection shocks. The franchise made two notable changes to their XI: Varun Chakravarthy picked up a hand injury during the previous game against Sunrisers Hyderabad after taking a catch, while Sunil Narine was unwell. Captain Ajinkya Rahane confirmed both developments at the toss.

The last time KKR took the field without either of their mystery spin options was in 2019, underlining how unusual this lineup looks for the side. With Narine missing and Chakravarthy sidelined, the balance of the bowling group shifts significantly, and KKR have fewer spin avenues available right from the start.

Rovman Powell comes into the team for his first outing of the season, while Navdeep Saini steps into KKR’s playing XI and makes his debut for the franchise. It will also be his first IPL match since 2023, when he played for Rajasthan Royals. As a result, Anukul Roy is the only spinner included in KKR’s starting group, and there is no spinner named among their Impact Player options.

Although rain arrived around the match period and even led to both teams having their training sessions cancelled on Sunday, Rahane felt the surface would play slightly drier. He said KKR wanted to set the tone by putting runs on the board first. There is added pressure on that plan too, with the side batting first managing only three wins out of their 11 matches in IPL 2026 so far.

Punjab Kings, meanwhile, went in with a clear and unchanged intent. Captain Shreyas Iyer said he wanted to bowl after the toss and felt his team got the outcome they were targeting. With the playing XI kept the same, Priyansh Arya is once again expected to be an option from the Impact Player bench when the time comes for Punjab to chase.
