CSK’s turnaround in IPL 2026 powered by spinners after Ashwin and Jadeja exits

Chennai Super Kings’ fortunes in recent seasons have often been closely linked to how well their spinners deliver, and IPL 2026 has been no exception. Noor Ahmad’s strong run helped him finish second in the Purple Cap standings, but the wider spin group had not been performing to the level CSK would expect. With Ravichandran Ashwin’s retirement and Ravindra Jadeja being traded away, the franchise faced a noticeable gap in its Indian spin resources. That opening has now been addressed with the arrival of Akeal Hosein, whose presence has helped shift CSK’s bowling performances in a big way.

Hosein was only added to the playing XI in the fourth match of the season, after CSK had already started with three straight losses. Since his first appearance, the results have improved sharply. In the five matches Hosein has played alongside Noor Ahmad, CSK have won four, including victories on the road against Mumbai and Delhi. The contrast with what came before is striking: in the run-up to CSK’s fourth game (from March 28 to April 10), the side sat at the bottom of major bowling indicators. But once Hosein entered the picture on April 11, CSK climbed to first place in average, strike rate, and economy, and they were also second by one wicket to Gujarat Titans’ 52.

Hosein’s influence has been especially clear in the Powerplay. In CSK’s opening three matches, they managed only two wickets in this phase, averaging 96.50 and conceding at 10.72 per over—figures that ranked as the second worst in the tournament. However, over the next seven games, CSK struck 12 wickets in the Powerplay, finishing second only to Gujarat Titans.

Hosein has been central to that improvement, picking up three Powerplay wickets himself. Just as importantly, he has maintained tight control—no other bowler has bowled more overs in this phase with a better economy rate than his 6.44. The discipline he brings has also helped CSK generate chances at the other end of the innings. With the early overs under better management, Noor Ahmad has been able to build his momentum through the middle stages.

Noor’s wicket tally after the Powerplay has been a key factor. After going wicketless in the first three matches, he has taken 11 wickets across the next seven, and all of them have come in the middle overs (7-15), where he leads the season charts. The difference is stark when CSK are compared with and without Hosein in the lineup: with Hosein, Noor has nine wickets in five matches at an average of 14.66 (economy rate 7.33). Without Hosein, Noor has managed only two wickets in five games at an average of 85.00 (economy rate 9.44).

Against Delhi Capitals, the Hosein-Noor combination delivered immediate pressure. The duo combined for 3/41 in seven overs, restricting Delhi to 69/5 and forcing an early Impact Sub decision—Sameer Rizvi coming in for all-rounder Vipraj Nigam. By comparison, Delhi’s spin pair returned 1/59 in seven overs, leaving Capitals with fewer opportunities to change the game’s rhythm in the middle overs.

The wider effect of CSK’s bowling unit is visible in how matches have turned out. In the five wins they have recorded, their bowling average across those games stands at 18.98. In defeats, it rises to 46.25—a swing of 27.27, the second-biggest gap of the season after Delhi Capitals’ 65.00. Those victories have been built on the ability to keep things under control: CSK have bowled out Delhi Capitals and Mumbai after setting “par” totals, held KKR to 160 after posting 192, marked the first successful defense of a sub-200 score this season, and in their most recent two outings they kept both Mumbai and Delhi to modest totals before sealing comfortable chases.

What initially looked like a campaign drifting off course has been corrected by a bowling unit that has found its rhythm again. With the spin department operating as a more effective unit, CSK have not only brought their season back into contention, but also put qualification back within reach.
