Chennai Super Kings spinner Akeal Hosein has opened up about how he approaches bowling during the powerplay, explaining that Kolkata Knight Riders mentor Dwayne Bravo urged him to be fearless in those early overs. Hosein said Bravo’s advice was especially relevant for spinners in the first phase of an innings, when batters are looking to press the attack and the risk of big hits is always present. Hosein’s comments have come after his return to the playing XI following three consecutive setbacks, a change that has coincided with CSK finding momentum. The latest proof of that turnaround was a sharp, eight-wicket victory over Delhi Capitals, where Hosein’s control in the powerplay played a major role in tilting the contest.
With Hosein tightening the screws early, Delhi were reduced to 61 for 5, leaving the chase in a precarious position. That early dent proved decisive as CSK went on to claim two crucial points, turning what could have been a difficult chase into a measured pursuit. Hosein described the mental side of powerplay bowling, saying the task is to remove fear, trust the plans that have been worked on, and stay focused on where the field is set to do the work.
“It’s about being brave. Dwayne Bravo told me, especially for spinners in the Powerplay, you’re going to get hit at some stage. The key is to remove that fear, trust your plans, and focus on your field placements. I also believe strongly in doing my homework and being well-prepared,” Hosein said.
After CSK made early inroads, the hosts slipped further to 69 for 5. Sameer Rizvi provided resistance with a composed 40 not out, while Tristan Stubbs supported him with 38 as Delhi Capitals reached 155 for 7. Even with a fight in the middle overs, the damage done at the start meant CSK had a clear pathway in the run chase.
Chennai’s chase was powered by Sanju Samson, who took charge with a brilliant 87 not out. His innings featured seven fours and six maximums, and he was able to keep the tempo moving without losing control. Kartik Sharma complemented him brilliantly from the other end, striking 41 not out to ensure the chase stayed firmly in CSK’s favour.
Samson’s impact did not go unnoticed, with former England captain Eoin Morgan pointing to the added value Samson brings to the team. Morgan said Samson’s performances reflect maturity and leadership, and praised how the wicketkeeper-batter marshalled the chase while also helping bring along the younger partner at the other end, specifically mentioning Kartik Sharma.
“I didn’t think his stock could get any higher, but he’s added even more value with this innings. The level of control he brings to the dressing room reflects experience and leadership, and he lets his performances do the talking. It was a joy to watch him marshal the run chase like a seasoned player, leading from the front while guiding a youngster like Karthik Sharma at the other end,” Morgan said.
Samson and Kartik forged an unbeaten partnership of 114 runs for the third wicket, carrying CSK past the finish line with 15 balls still remaining. The successful chase extended CSK’s momentum, and it also highlighted how well the middle order combination is working as the season progresses.
Following the match, former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar praised Kartik Sharma’s development and suggested that the youngster is ideally placed at No. 4 for CSK’s longer-term structure. Bangar said the franchise environment offers young players opportunities without the constant pressure of instant results, adding that Kartik’s growth has been visible with every game.
“He’s in the right franchise, one that gives young players opportunities without the pressure of immediate results. There’s a sense of security within the CSK setup, and he’s grown with every game. What stands out is his ability to play straight and back his strengths. That’s a key quality, and with time, he will only improve further. A player like him at No. 4 fits perfectly into CSK’s long-term plans,” Bangar said on JioStar.
With this result, CSK have now recorded their second successive win and sit sixth in the points table. They are just two points behind the group of teams placed from second to fifth, putting them back in the mix as the season heads into a crucial phase.
