Julian Metherell Appointed Next MCC President, Succeeds Ed Smith

Julian Metherell has been confirmed as the next President of Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), with Ed Smith naming him as the successor at the club’s 239th Annual General Meeting. Metherell is due to take up the position on October 1, 2026. A long-time MCC member for four decades, he has recently worked within the club’s committee and has played a prominent role in the organisation’s earliest major move into franchise cricket.

From MCC committee to London Spirit leadership

  1. Metherell led negotiations as the England and Wales Cricket Board completed the sale of a 49% stake in London Spirit, a franchise based at Lord’s.
  2. Following the ownership change last year, he took over as chair of the London Spirit franchise.

Before his roles in cricket administration, Metherell built a career in finance. He spent more than ten years at Goldman Sachs, including a period as chief executive of the firm’s UK investment banking business, before later moving into the energy sector. He has also served as Non-Executive Chair of the Professional Cricketers’ Association, adding to his experience across the sport’s governance and player-facing structures.

In his statement after the appointment, Metherell expressed pride at the opportunity. “I am deeply honoured to take on the role of MCC President, following in the footsteps of many of my cricketing idols. I have a long connection with MCC and I have many cherished memories at Lord’s.” He added, “This is a really exciting time to be involved with MCC, especially as it starts a new era of ownership of a professional cricket team and I am looking forward to driving forward both the Club and London Spirit.”

Metherell’s presidency is also set to cover a major Ashes milestone at the historic venue. Lord’s is scheduled to host both the men’s and women’s Ashes Tests in 2027 during his tenure.
