Sairaj Bahutule is in the frame to take charge as India’s spin-bowling coach, with a potential transition away from Punjab Kings expected after the conclusion of the ongoing IPL season. The former India spinner, who is currently part of PBKS’ setup, is understood to be nearing a separation from the franchise as discussions have reportedly been held across the relevant parties, including head coach Gautam Gambhir and senior representatives of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
How the India role for Bahutule has come about
- Bahutule, aged 53, has built a reputation for his coaching work with spinners, a quality that has drawn the attention of Gambhir.
- It is understood that conversations have taken place with all stakeholders involved, spanning cricket board officials and the India coaching leadership.
- Within the current Team India staff, batting is handled by Sitanshu Kotak, fast bowling by Morne Morkel, fielding by T Dilip, and the assistant coaching role is filled by Ryan ten Doeschate.
- There is currently no specialist spin-bowling coach in the setup, and Gambhir is believed to have recommended Bahutule for that vacancy.
Past links with India’s coaching group
Bahutule has previously travelled with the senior Indian team on multiple occasions during his time connected to the National Cricket Academy/Centre of Excellence, led by VVS Laxman. His association with India’s coaching plans also includes a request from former head coach Rahul Dravid, who specifically wanted Bahutule to be part of the touring group for the 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Bahutule was also included in Dravid’s support staff during a tour of Sri Lanka.
What happens with Punjab Kings and the IPL timeline
A potential onboarding into the India setup is expected soon, though the exact timing is likely to be influenced by Bahutule’s contractual responsibilities with Punjab Kings. He joined the franchise for the current IPL cycle under head coach Ricky Ponting. Before that, Bahutule spent a year with Rajasthan Royals, working alongside Dravid during his stint with the team.
Should the India appointment be confirmed on a tight schedule, Bahutule may need to curtail his time with PBKS. Even so, Punjab Kings are not expected to create obstacles, particularly given that the role is tied to the India team and the BCCI. Bahutule was not available for comment at the time of writing, with calls and text messages going unanswered. Cricbuzz also reportedly reached out to Punjab Kings’ management to seek their perspective.
