Ravichandran Ashwin has weighed in on the IPL 2026 playoffs picture, pointing to a tough road ahead for Chennai Super Kings after another significant twist in the standings. The latest change came after Kolkata Knight Riders produced a commanding performance against Delhi Capitals, squeezing the qualification race tighter for several franchises still chasing a top-four finish.
Key takeaways
- Kolkata Knight Riders kept their playoff hopes alive with a dominant chase of 143 against Delhi Capitals.
- Finn Allen struck his first IPL century and Cameron Green played a key stabilising role as KKR won comfortably.
- Sunrisers Hyderabad remain top of the table with 14 points from 11 matches, followed by Punjab Kings on 13 from 10.
- Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Rajasthan Royals are in the next two slots with 12 points each, while Gujarat Titans are also on 12 but face a possible net run-rate headache.
- Chennai Super Kings sit sixth on 10 points from 10 games, leaving them with little margin for error.
- Ashwin believes SRH and RCB are close to qualification, with the remaining places expected to be fought among Gujarat Titans, Rajasthan Royals, and Punjab Kings.
KKR’s statement win tightens the playoff race
Kolkata’s victory over Delhi ensured that the race for the playoffs remains congested, with multiple teams still within striking distance. Chasing 143, the innings began with early setbacks, but Finn Allen and Cameron Green steadied the charge and took control of the chase.
Allen made the difference by smashing his maiden IPL century, turning a fragile start into a platform for a comfortable finish. With Green also contributing effectively in the middle overs, KKR managed the chase with authority and kept the momentum firmly on their side.
Where the table stands after the latest results
At the top, Sunrisers Hyderabad are leading the standings with 14 points from 11 matches. Punjab Kings follow closely with 13 points from 10 games, setting up a battle at the summit as the tournament moves deeper into its second half.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru occupy the third position with 12 points, while Rajasthan Royals are fourth on the same points tally. Gujarat Titans are still very much in the mix with 12 points as well, though their negative net run rate could become a decisive factor if results continue to cluster around the same points range.
Chennai Super Kings are currently placed sixth, having collected 10 points from 10 matches. Ashwin’s comments underline that CSK’s situation is not yet secure, and the team will need strong performances from here to remain in contention.
Ashwin’s IPL 2026 playoff outlook and CSK’s qualification equation
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ash Ki Baat, Ashwin outlined his expectations for the playoff line-up. He suggested that Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bengaluru are almost certain to reach the playoffs, leaving the remaining two positions to be decided among Gujarat Titans, Rajasthan Royals, and Punjab Kings.
“SRH and RCB are confirmed. Between GT, RR and PBKS, the other two playoff spots will be decided,” Ashwin said, framing the race as a three-way contest for the final two spots.
He then explained why CSK cannot afford any slip-ups in their remaining fixtures. In his view, Chennai’s path requires complete control of their own results, with external results also likely to play a major role.
“For CSK to qualify, they must win all four remaining matches. They can’t leave it to chance. Even with 16 points, qualification will depend on RR losing three out of four, PBKS dropping points and CSK maintaining a strong NRR,” Ashwin added.
Net run rate and the next CSK turning point
Ashwin also highlighted net run rate as the key differentiator for teams in a tight table. He pointed to Chennai’s upcoming matches against Lucknow Super Giants as potential turning points, stressing that these games could shape the final qualification equation.
“That’s where net run rate becomes important. I feel if Chennai win both matches against LSG, they won’t just qualify, they could go all the way, just like in 2010. Every match from here is a blockbuster.”
