GUWAHATI: Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians meet on Tuesday at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium with both sides carrying very different momentum into the contest. The Royals arrive buoyed by back-to-back wins, while the five-time champions are still searching for steadier performances after a six-wicket defeat to Delhi Capitals, following an opening win that came in dominant fashion against Kolkata Knight Riders.
Royals’ early rhythm vs MI’s search for consistency
Rajasthan kicked off their campaign with a statement win over Chennai Super Kings at their adopted base in Guwahati. They then followed that with a sharp, composed win over Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad. In the most recent outing, the Riyan Parag-led group defended just 15 runs in the last two overs to clinch victory by six runs, and that finish has left the side brimming with confidence as they prepare for their second game at this venue.
Hardik Pandya’s return and MI’s reshuffle
For Mumbai, the biggest talking point is the expected return of captain Hardik Pandya, who missed the previous match because of viral fever. With India T20 skipper Suryakumar Yadav taking over as stand-in captain against Delhi Capitals, MI had to alter their combination and looked slightly out of sync during that period.
Pandya has since resumed training and is expected to return to the playing XI, although he did not take part in Monday’s session after working in the nets on Sunday. Ahead of the clash, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey struck an optimistic note on his availability.
- Mhambrey said Pandya will be available for the match and that he hit the nets for a couple of hours on the previous day.
- He added that Pandya is fit and fine and that he was not dealing with an injury, only illness.
During Pandya’s absence, MI brought in South African allrounder Corbin Bosch as a like-for-like replacement, with Trent Boult making way. Deepak Chahar contributed a tidy spell, but Bosch couldn’t swing the game in MI’s favour, leaving the bowling setup without the desired balance.
Bumrah’s wicket drought, Royals’ batting form, and the key match-up
Jasprit Bumrah has continued to bowl economically, yet he is yet to register a wicket this season. Mitchell Santner, meanwhile, has impressed enough to hold on to his place. Still, MI’s attack faces a stern test against Rajasthan’s current batting momentum.
Rajasthan’s top order has looked explosive, with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal providing strong starts. Dhruv Jurel has offered steadiness at number three. Parag and Shimron Hetmyer are yet to spend significant time in the middle, but their ability to add depth to the batting order remains a clear advantage.
Parag, in particular, will be encouraged by his calm leadership against Gujarat Titans, where his smart bowling changes helped Tushar Deshpande defend 11 runs in the final over. With Jofra Archer and Nadre Burger sharing the new ball effectively, Rajasthan appear well balanced as a unit.
MI, however, have the firepower to change the course of a match through Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma. That sets up a clash where early momentum will be tested by senior experience and proven match-winners.
Numbers that could shape MI vs RR
