Lucknow Super Giants found themselves at the centre of a fresh IPL rules controversy after a member of the backroom staff was allegedly spotted using a mobile phone while inside the dugout. The incident came to light during their match against Chennai Super Kings in Chennai on Sunday, when broadcast cameras reportedly swung toward the LSG camp and captured a staff member appearing to take part in a phone call. The clip quickly drew sharp reaction online, with many users claiming it breached BCCI regulations governing the use of electronic devices in match-day areas. That said, it was never clearly established whether the footage actually came from the LSG dugout or from a separate VIP section within the venue. The individual’s identity and the exact location where the device was used were also not independently confirmed.
The IPL’s Player and Match Official Arena (POMA) rules allow certain mobile use, but only within tightly defined zones. Under the stated protocol, mobile phones and other electronic communication equipment are not permitted in the PMOA except for a limited set of personnel. The team manager, for instance, may use a phone only in the dressing room area and not in the dugout. The guidelines further specify that analysts can use computers at the analyst table, while players and support staff equipment—such as phones, smart watches, or any other communication devices—must be switched off and handed to the team SLO for secure storage upon arrival at the ground. Accredited staff, including dressing room attendants, the IPL Match Manager, catering personnel and similar roles, are also not allowed to carry communication devices into the PMOA. For compliance, secure boxes are said to be placed at every entrance so staff can store devices safely before entering restricted areas.
On the field in Chennai, the storyline turned on the result as Chennai Super Kings overcame Lucknow Super Giants by five wickets in an exciting contest. While the dugout controversy added noise off the pitch, CSK ultimately finished the chase to secure the win.
There was also a separate enforcement action involving mobile use in dugout areas elsewhere in the IPL cycle. Rajasthan Royals (RR) team manager Romi Bhinder was fined Rs 1 lakh and received an official warning for using a mobile phone inside the dugout during the IPL 2026 match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the ACA Stadium in Guwahati on April 10.
