MI Knocked Out of IPL 2026 Playoffs as RCB Seal Thriller on Last Ball

Mumbai Indians were formally knocked out of the IPL 2026 playoff hunt after a devastating defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Raipur on Sunday. Chasing 167 at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium—RCB’s adopted venue—the Bengaluru side completed the run-down on the very last ball, denying Mumbai’s five-time title credentials as they failed to protect a 15-run advantage in the final over.

With Hardik Pandya ruled out due to injury, Suryakumar Yadav stepped in as captain and later admitted that the early exit was a tough reality to process. Mumbai’s elimination had appeared looming for a while, but the confirmation came in Raipur when the defending champions lost by two wickets, marking their eighth defeat of the league stage from 11 matches. Even with three matches still to play, Suryakumar said it is difficult to adjust to the idea that one of IPL’s most decorated franchises will not be part of the playoffs this year.

“I think we can just try and play this game because we love it. Though we are not used to being in this position often. Hard pill to swallow. Hopefully we will come back well next year,” Suryakumar said during the post-match presentation.

Why Mumbai’s season unravelled

This was not Mumbai’s first brush with an early exit in recent years. Since their last IPL title in 2020, they have ended seasons at the bottom of the standings twice—first in 2022 and again in 2024. They have also managed to reach the playoffs only on two occasions across the six-season span that includes 2025.

Mumbai’s IPL 2026 timeline

  1. Mumbai began IPL 2026 on a positive note, securing a home win against Kolkata Knight Riders.
  2. That early momentum faded quickly as the team suffered a run of losses, leaving them stuck in the lower half of the table.
  3. As Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma struggled to find consistent form, and with Jasprit Bumrah going wicketless, Mumbai repeatedly fell short in both departments—batting execution and bowling plans—leading to four straight defeats.
  4. Tilak Varma then responded with a dramatic century, helping Mumbai beat Gujarat Titans by 99 runs and lifting them off the bottom of the table.
  5. However, the resurgence did not last, with three consecutive defeats following that big win.
  6. Mumbai’s third victory of the season arrived last week against Lucknow Super Giants, a match that came with the bitter context of the other team’s playoff hopes also ending after Sunday’s result.

The Raipur finish: RCB’s last-over rescue

Against Bengaluru in Raipur, Mumbai were at one stage on the verge of pulling off the kind of win that could have kept their league hopes alive. Corbin Bosch struck through the middle order, and Jasprit Bumrah then delivered a sharp 19th over that yielded only three runs. With Raj Bawa set a target of 15 to defend in the final over, Mumbai still had a realistic chance to hold their nerve.

  1. Bawa started with early success, dismissing RCB’s last recognised batter, Romario Shepherd, within the first three deliveries.
  2. Despite that promising opening, Bhuvneshwar Kumar struck an unexpected six on the fourth ball, shifting the pressure back toward Mumbai.
  3. From there, Bengaluru kept climbing toward the target and ultimately completed the chase at the death, sealing a last-ball thriller and sending Mumbai out of the playoff race.

The defeat completed a painful season pattern for Mumbai: eight losses in 11 matches, and a campaign that never truly gained traction—ending, finally, in Raipur with a two-wicket loss that left them unable to defend their place among the contenders.
