Cummins, Hazlewood, Starc and Head skip Pakistan ODIs to focus on IPL 2026

Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Cooper Connolly, Xavier Bartlett and Travis Head are set to skip Australia’s next three-match ODI series against Pakistan, which starts on May 30. Cricket Australia’s selection group has named separate squads for the white-ball contests versus Pakistan and Bangladesh, with the four senior IPL-linked names remaining in India for the ongoing 2026 Indian Premier League.

With Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) appearing on course to finish in the top four, the more established Australians would likely have been needed for the IPL playoffs. Starc, who plays for Delhi Capitals, still has a mathematical pathway to qualification, but the Pakistan tour group will proceed without the listed senior contingent.

Quick facts

  • Australia will play three ODIs vs Pakistan starting May 30, followed by matches on June 2 and June 4.
  • The Pakistan ODIs are scheduled in Rawalpindi and Lahore.
  • Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Cooper Connolly, Xavier Bartlett and Travis Head will miss the Pakistan ODI series.
  • Mitchell Marsh, Cameron Green and Josh Inglis have been added to Australia’s ODI squad for Pakistan.
  • Marsh and Inglis are currently with Lucknow Super Giants (LSH), while Green is with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
  • Cricket Australia has not confirmed whether Cameron Green could be removed from the squad if KKR make the top four.

For the Pakistan series, Mitchell Marsh, Cameron Green and Josh Inglis have been included in Australia’s ODI group. Marsh and Inglis are in action for Lucknow Super Giants, while Green represents Kolkata Knight Riders. LSG are already out of the playoff race, but KKR still have a realistic chance of reaching the top four.

If KKR do book a top-four spot, there is a possibility Green could be pulled out of the international group as well. However, no formal announcement has been made by Cricket Australia on that front yet.

Pakistan then Bangladesh

The three ODIs against Pakistan will be staged on May 30, June 2 and June 4, with venues listed as Rawalpindi and Lahore. Australia will then move on to Bangladesh for three ODIs and an equal number of T20Is, keeping the tour structure firmly packed across both formats.

Chair of selectors George Bailey framed the selection as a deliberate balance between established campaigners and newcomers. He said it is “always exciting” to see fresh faces earn a chance at international cricket and join the national setup.

Bailey added that pairing experienced players with new or returning options creates a good mix for tours across subcontinental conditions. He also emphasized that building opportunities for development across a wide range of environments will remain a priority over the next 18 months to two years, with future campaigns in view.
