Punjab Kings’ early momentum has faded sharply in IPL 2026, and the side now heads into Dharamsala with pressure building after a rough patch. PBKS have dropped into a three-match losing streak and are no longer occupying the top spot, sitting fourth on the points table with 13 points from 10 games. With Delhi Capitals arriving for the contest, Punjab have an opportunity to climb back to first place—if they beat DC, they would move to 15 points and take over the summit. The recent results, however, have exposed gaps, especially in defending totals and maintaining intensity in the field. Against Rajasthan Royals, Punjab could not protect a 222-run target. Their batting then slipped under pressure versus Gujarat Titans, finishing at 163 for nine. They also fell short while chasing 236 against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Compounding those batting struggles, PBKS’ fielding has been a major concern, with 16 catches missed so far. Shashank Singh has been particularly costly, missing five catches on his own.
Delhi Capitals, meanwhile, are also not travelling smoothly, having lost five of their last six matches. DC currently occupy eighth place in the standings, but their season is not over mathematically, and a playoff route is still available if results go their way. The last time these two teams met, PBKS got the better of DC by six wickets in a high-scoring encounter. In that match, KL Rahul delivered a standout innings of 152 not out off 67 balls, helping Delhi post 264 for 2 in their full quota. Nitish Rana added momentum with a rapid 91 off 44 deliveries, and for a while it looked like DC had done enough to secure victory. Yet Punjab responded with a composed chase, reaching 265 for 4 in 18.5 overs. Prabhsimran Singh struck 76 off just 26 balls, while Shreyas Iyer finished the job with 71 not out from 36 balls.
Ahead of the new clash, DC assistant coach Ian Bell acknowledged the inconsistency that has marked their season. He said, “(Our season) has been inconsistent. I think we sit here now and you look at a few games where we had our opportunities, and I think when you play in the IPL and at the highest level of cricket against world-class players, you have to take those moments, and we probably haven’t done that ruthlessly enough.”
