David Warner Charged With Drink Driving After Sydney Breath Test, Court Date Set

Former Australia opener David Warner has been charged with drink driving after police stopped him in Maroubra, Sydney, during a random breath test. The 39-year-old was reported to have pulled over and parked his car before reaching the testing point. Officers then approached his vehicle and carried out a breath test, which showed he was over the limit. Warner was arrested and taken to Maroubra Police Station, where he recorded a breath-alcohol reading of 0.104. He is set to appear in court next month.

Warner’s current franchise calendar and recent form

Warner, who is presently captaining Karachi Kings in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2026, had travelled to Australia earlier because there were only a few days between matches for the franchise. The left-hander retired from international cricket in 2024, but he has stayed active in franchise cricket, including the Big Bash League (BBL).

In the BBL, Warner enjoyed a strong campaign with the Sydney Thunder and was also named captain of the tournament’s official team. During the original season, he finished as the leading run-scorer for the Thunder, though the side managed just two wins and ended at the bottom of the standings.

Warner contributed 433 runs from eight matches for the Thunder. The next-highest scorer for the franchise made 201 fewer runs than him, underlining his role as the batting foundation. He has already agreed to return to the Thunder for the next BBL season.

What Warner said after confirming his Thunder return

When his new deal was confirmed, Warner said he was eager to keep playing for the Thunder and was ready to get started with the franchise again. He described the previous season as difficult, adding that the group was better than what it showed on the field and that it failed to produce consistent performances.

Warner also pointed to the impact of the supporters, saying their presence at games in large numbers heavily influenced his decision to remain with the team. He expressed confidence that he still has plenty to offer to both the Thunder and the competition, and said he felt comfortable with his own output while being proud to give the side a chance to compete.

He added that the Thunder have already begun reviewing the season and putting structures in place to build a more dominant campaign in BBL16.

Karachi Kings in the PSL and next assignment

While Warner’s future in the BBL is now settled, his PSL focus remains firmly on Karachi Kings. The franchise is currently second in the points table after three consecutive victories.

Karachi Kings are scheduled to play Peshawar Zalmi on Thursday, April 9, at the National Stadium in Karachi, with Warner continuing to lead the team.

Warner’s international record includes 112 Tests, 161 ODIs, and 110 T20Is for Australia, with more than 15,000 runs across those three formats. He also won the IPL with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016, guiding the franchise to the title.
