Yorkshire Cricketer Jamie Spence Dies in New Zealand Car Crash

Yorkshire-born cricketer Jamie Spence has died following a road accident in New Zealand, with another man, French national Raphael Jean-Gabriel Roellinger, also reported to have been killed. Spence was 28. The crash occurred on April 29 near Kinleith on the North Island.

Spence, who was associated with Yorkshire, played for the Hull Strikers, a local side, and the club remembered him as one of its most enthusiastic and driven figures. In a tribute, Hull Strikers described him as “a true member of the Strikers family from the very beginning”, adding that while he was the team’s youngest, he remained among the most energetic, lively, and passionate both on the field and in everyday life. The club also highlighted how deeply he cared about the sport and the group, saying his “smile, his spirit, and his love for the game brought life to our club”.

In the days immediately after the tragedy, Hull Strikers still went ahead with their scheduled contest against Hessle CC. With the team reduced to 10 available players, they managed to win by seven runs, a result the club dedicated to Spence.

Speaking further about the impact of the loss, Hull Strikers said the death had created “a void that can never truly be filled”. They added that Spence was more than just a player, calling him one of the biggest supporters the club had, someone who consistently brought energy, intensity, and a smile that lifted those around him. The club also noted that Spence’s father, Jon, attended the match, describing it as a particularly emotional and meaningful moment for everyone present.

The tribute concluded with words intended to keep Spence at the heart of the team’s spirit: “This victory is for you. There is no better tribute than giving everything out there, just like you always did. You’ll always be a part of this team. Forever a Striker.”
