Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s Swinging Comeback Powers RCB Revival After 13 Years

RAIPUR: On a December evening in 2012 at Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium, a young Uttar Pradesh quick got his first real taste of the international stage with a dream T20I debut against Pakistan. With the new ball, Bhuvneshwar Kumar swung the ball and landed it with precision, finishing with figures of 3/9. Over 13 years later—when T20 cricket has swung even further toward batters—his place in the IPL still looks anything but uncertain. At 36, he has evolved from a promising swing-bowling prospect into a bowler defined by craft, discipline, and an ability to reinvent himself when the game changes around him.

How Bhuvneshwar adapted to the modern IPL

  1. Bhuvneshwar currently has 21 wickets from 11 matches and is leading the IPL wicket charts this season, a telling marker in a league where 200-plus totals do not automatically feel secure anymore.
  2. He believes his survival in today’s T20 landscape depends on continuous evolution—especially how quickly a bowler must respond to situations as batters approach each ball with more intent.
  3. “My skills and the mental aspect of my game have changed a lot. What also changed is accepting situations quickly,” he said, adding that the mindset required to deal with batters today is different from what it was a decade ago.
  4. He pointed out that batters now attack from the start, with unconventional shot-making becoming routine and even well-directed deliveries frequently disappearing into the stands.
  5. Reflecting on the shift in what bowlers perceive as “good” output, Bhuvneshwar noted how attitudes have changed: “Five years ago, if you gave 40 runs, I used to think it was a bad day. Now, if you give 40 runs, I consider it good bowling!”
  6. He also described how the target-setting psychology has moved: earlier, 200 felt like a winning number, whereas now chases around 200 can feel like “just 200,” reshaping how spells are measured.

Even with the demands rising every year, Bhuvneshwar has continued to be among the tournament’s most trusted fast-bowling options. He has been able to contribute in both phases of the innings—starting in the Powerplay and finishing at the death—making his impact difficult to ignore across different game scripts. The former India pacer, who has not played international cricket since November 2022, insists there is no single secret behind his longevity, instead linking his staying power to discipline and consistency.

“Motivation is overrated,” he said. “It’s discipline. You are tired, you don’t want to go, but still you have to go. That consistency — doing things day in and day out — makes you consistent on the field as well.”

At the same time, he acknowledged that age has brought physical hurdles. “When you are young, recovery takes less time compared to this age,” he said. “Physically, it is tougher but mentally it becomes easier because you are mature and experienced. You understand your game much better.”

With younger, fearless batters continuing to set new standards in T20 cricket, Bhuvneshwar remains confident that bowlers will always find answers. “Batters do something, then bowlers evolve. That is how cricket has always worked,” he said.

Full circle with RCB

Bhuvneshwar’s IPL story with Royal Challengers Bengaluru has come full circle as well. He was part of the franchise ecosystem in 2009 and 2010 when he was still a young domestic cricketer. He returned in 2025 as one of India’s most experienced pacers, and he described the transformation in his role and mindset since those early days.

“Everything changed for me,” he said. “At that time, I was a domestic player. First time into the setup, I was just looking at the glamorous side of it. I was nervous looking at other players, overseas players. But now it’s changed a lot because now a big part of being in the team is being a senior player.”

His current form reflects that senior responsibility on the field as well—an approach shaped by how T20 has evolved, and by the belief that staying effective requires constant adjustment rather than relying on past versions of the game.
