Kolkata Knight Riders assistant coach Shane Watson has admitted that his team will be “hoping against the odds” when it comes to dismissing Virat Kohli cheaply in their IPL showdown on Wednesday. Kohli began the campaign in electric fashion, but has recently gone through a small wobble, with back-to-back ducks. Even so, the expectation in Raipur is that he will respond with the kind of intent that has often defined his best outings against tough opposition.
What makes Kohli particularly difficult to contain right now is the way he has been approaching his batting role this season. He has leaned into an aggressive mindset during the powerplay, looking to strike early rather than settle into the innings. That attacking approach has delivered quick scoring bursts, but it has also created a higher-risk scenario—when he commits from the very first overs, early dismissals can follow if the execution isn’t perfect. Watson believes KKR must be mindful of the threat that this mindset brings, and that getting Kohli out early could play a decisive part in shaping the contest.
Watson on Kohli’s tactical edge
Ahead of the high-pressure match in Raipur, Watson spoke about the persistent challenge of facing one of cricket’s modern benchmarks. He framed Kohli as a player who forces every opponent to create a plan, then adapt it on the spot. In Watson’s view, the difficulty isn’t just that teams come up with strategies—it’s that Kohli understands the plans well enough to neutralise them.
“Every team has plans against Virat Kohli because he’s one of the best players in the world. But the challenge is that he knows exactly how to counter those plans as well,” Watson said during the pre-match press interaction.
Watson also expanded on what KKR will need to do as a bowling unit. He pointed to Kohli’s discipline, the intensity he brings throughout his innings, and his knack for turning games in the batting powerplay and beyond. For KKR, the message was clear: they cannot afford lapses from the first ball, because Kohli’s hunger to take control means he is always capable of setting up a match for his team, especially at the top of the order.
“We’re hoping he might play an aggressive shot early like he did in the last game, although the chances of that are probably remote because Virat is so disciplined. He’s extraordinary. His hunger to be the best and his intensity on every single ball are still burning very brightly. We know we need to be switched on from ball one because he’s someone who can set up a match incredibly well for his team,” Watson added.
Kohli’s 400-plus aspirations
Kohli’s current workload with Royal Challengers Bengaluru has been another strong chapter in his IPL journey. In IPL 2026, he has continued to deliver from the top, building momentum across the early stages of the tournament. So far, he has amassed 379 runs from 11 matches, maintaining an average of 42.11 while striking at 163.36. Although he hasn’t reached a century yet this season, his consistency remains evident, with three half-centuries already recorded and a highest score of 81.
With his aggressive intent paired with the ability to anchor when required, Kohli has again emerged as one of RCB’s key performers in their campaign—setting the tone for what could be another major run tally as the tournament progresses.
