All-rounder Washington Sundar praised the discipline and steadiness within the Gujarat Titans camp after the franchise extended its winning run to five straight matches in IPL 2026. On Tuesday, Gujarat registered an 82-run victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad, a result that underlined both their batting foundation and a ruthless bowling display at Narendra Modi Stadium.
Gujarat’s innings began with a total that looked, at first glance, slightly under par: 168 for 5. However, the pitch offered help to the bowlers, and the Titans made full use of it by dismissing SRH for just 86 in 14.5 overs. The pace unit struck early and consistently, setting up the spinners to finish the contest in controlled fashion.
Reflecting on the team’s recent form, Sundar said the season has been tightly contested and that sustained success requires clarity. “It means a lot. This season has been extremely competitive, with every team coming hard at us. To win five games on the trot speaks volumes about the consistency we’ve shown as a unit. At the same time, sticking to what has worked for us is also a challenge. You can sometimes lose rhythm by trying to do too many things, but I think we’ve done well to avoid that. A lot of credit has to go to the team for maintaining that clarity and consistency,” Sundar said on Jio Hotstar.
When Gujarat batted after losing the toss, they endured an awkward start and found themselves reeling at 64 for 3 in 9.3 overs. From there, Sundar teamed up with Sai Sudharsan to build a 60-run stand that steadied the innings and ultimately helped the Titans post 168 from their 20 overs.
On how the partnership developed, Sundar highlighted the importance of communication and reading the match situation. “It’s always enjoyable batting with Sai because we constantly communicate in the middle. It was important for me to understand both the situation and the nature of the wicket, especially since it was doing a bit more than usual. Early on, I wasn’t finding boundaries, while Sai was able to get them without taking many risks. That balance really helped both of us and allowed the partnership to settle in nicely,” he added.
Even with Gujarat sitting at the top of the points table, carrying 16 points from 12 matches, Sundar stressed that the focus must remain on the next challenge rather than the standings. “It’s extremely important for us to stay present and understand what has worked well for us so far. We’ve been playing some really good cricket, but there’s still a long way to go in the tournament. Hopefully, we can continue this momentum and eventually go on to win the championship,” he concluded.
With this victory in the bag, Shubman Gill’s team will move on to face Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on May 16, as they aim to move closer to securing a place in the playoffs.
