Punjab Kings assistant bowling coach Trevor Gonsalves has underlined that the franchise is keeping its focus firmly on cricket, even as the team’s name has been increasingly dragged into online debate during a tense stretch of IPL 2026. After finishing as runners-up last season, Punjab Kings have found themselves at the centre of social media chatter, largely linked to off-field headlines involving some players. Yet ahead of an important fixture against Mumbai Indians, Gonsalves made it clear that the squad’s priority is performance, preparation, and executing plans on the field.
Speaking to reporters before the match, Gonsalves acknowledged that social media has become a major force in modern T20 cricket and that media noise can quickly grow louder than the game itself. Still, he insisted that senior members of the dressing room know exactly how to respond to external criticism. “Yes, today social media plays a big role, and the news cycle plays a big role as well. How the leading players handle themselves against all these things is absolutely important,” he said when asked about the team’s approach amid online criticism and discussion.
Gonsalves added that the experienced lot does not require any instructions on how to manage backlash or react to what is being said online. In his view, the group is mature enough to block out distractions and keep conversations from spilling into match-day thinking. “You don’t need anyone to teach them, first of all. They are big enough. They know how to control themselves. As far as we are concerned, we are more concerned about the cricketing part,” he said on the eve of Punjab Kings’ contest against MI.
He also pointed to how quickly misinformation can spread across platforms, often gaining momentum simply because large numbers of people choose to agree with it. “Any blogger or any person can go and put up anything on social media and there are lakhs of people agreeing to it and saying yes or no,” Gonsalves noted. Despite that, he stressed that Punjab Kings are not letting online speculation dictate their mindset. “But, frankly speaking, we are not too concerned about what the social media says. Now, at present, we are only concerned and worried about tomorrow’s game and how we are moving forward in the cricketing part,” he added.
Punjab Kings had also put out a direct message through their official social media channels, urging fans and content creators to avoid sharing unverified claims. The franchise said that while criticism, banter, and opinions are part of sport, fake stories and made-up narratives created purely for engagement should not be amplified. The statement called on everyone to verify information before spreading it, particularly when it risks turning speculation into misinformation.
Co-owner Preity Zinta further weighed in on the growing online narratives around the side, calling for more responsibility when posting and sharing information publicly. She drew a clear line between legitimate criticism and deliberate misinformation, saying that healthy debate about the game is welcome, but the intentional spread of false narratives intended to harm individuals, the team, or the brand would not be taken lightly. Zinta also urged even verified voices and media professionals to exercise caution before amplifying unverified claims.
All of this comes at a time when Punjab Kings’ campaign has become difficult in multiple ways. They had started IPL 2026 with a dream run, staying unbeaten in their first seven matches—winning six and having one fixture abandoned without a result due to rain. Their aggressive style and consistent performances quickly made them one of the tournament’s most formidable outfits. However, the trajectory has changed sharply in recent weeks, with four successive defeats denting their momentum and complicating their playoff hopes, while also increasing pressure as the league stage enters its final stretch.
At the same time, the franchise has had to manage additional off-field attention. Star spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has recently drawn online focus after a video allegedly showing him vaping on a flight circulated across social media. Opener Prabhsimran Singh has also been discussed online regarding his fitness and reported weight gain. Even with these distractions and the recent dip in results, Punjab Kings remain in the playoff hunt.
They are currently positioned fourth in the points table with 13 points, and wins in their next two matches would keep their playoff qualification hopes alive for a second consecutive season. With key games still scheduled against Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Lucknow Super Giants, Punjab Kings now face a defining phase of IPL 2026—one where results on the field will need to match the message from the dressing room about staying disciplined amid the noise off it.
