New Delhi: Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi made an emotional trip to Greater Noida this week to meet former Afghanistan fast bowler Shapoor Zadran, who is currently receiving hospital care there. The 38-year-old is battling a rare and potentially life-threatening medical condition, and the visit highlighted the deep bond that still exists between teammates long after their playing days.
Zadran is being treated for Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a serious immune system disorder that can set off dangerous inflammation and affect multiple organs. Reports indicate that he has been undergoing treatment in the Delhi-NCR area for the past few months as his condition has required intensive medical attention.
After meeting Zadran on Wednesday, Nabi shared a heartfelt update online, admitting that it was hard to see a once-feared pace bowler confined to a hospital bed. In his message, he said that together with Rashid Khan, he had met “our dear brother Shapoor Jaan” in Greater Noida, adding that seeing the same tall, passionate and strong-hearted Shapoor—someone they had always admired for his fighting spirit on the cricket field—was “truly heartbreaking.”
Nabi also posted photographs from the intensive care unit and ended his message with prayers for Zadran’s recovery. He wished that Shapoor receives complete and speedy improvement through divine mercy, hoping he returns soon to his family and supporters healthy, smiling, and reunited with those who care for him.
Earlier in the treatment, Zadran had shown signs of improvement and was discharged from the hospital, but later suffered a relapse roughly 20 days afterward, as per reports. That setback has once again made his recovery a closely watched concern for those following his situation.
Known for his attacking left-arm bowling, Zadran represented Afghanistan in international cricket from 2009 to 2020. During that period, he played 44 One-Day Internationals and 36 Twenty20 Internationals, contributing to the team’s rise on the global stage.
