Agarkar panel set to name India squads vs Afghanistan after May 19

The All-India senior men’s selection panel, led by Ajit Agarkar, is expected to finalise the squads for a one-off Test against Afghanistan followed by three ODIs, with the matches slated to begin after May 19. Ahead of the selection meeting, a note has reportedly been sent to players in contention, asking them to build up their training loads progressively so they are ready for the five-day assignment that comes immediately after the ongoing Indian Premier League.

For the Test, Shubman Gill is anticipated to steer a batting line-up that the selectors view as well-balanced. The group tasked with bowling is still expected to be fine-tuned closer to the day of the meeting, with final choices likely to reflect both form and availability. With Jasprit Bumrah expected to receive rest, the door could open for several fresh faces, especially since the fixture is not part of the World Test Championship and the team’s experimentation window is wider.

One name being talked about in the bowling mix is Gurnoor Brar, who has impressed with his ability to land the ball consistently in the right areas while also generating pace and noticeable movement. His recent impact has made him a serious option as the panel looks for effectiveness in conditions that demand both control and threat.

When it comes to the ODI squad, major shocks are not expected, but one selection call—particularly around the second wicketkeeper role—could carry real weight. Rishabh Pant has been involved in the set-up previously, but his standing has slipped after uneven batting returns during the IPL. Ishan Kishan, on the other hand, has been in strong touch since returning to international T20 cricket, and it would not be surprising if he is given another opportunity.

Kishan’s recent form has also been under discussion in past meetings. As a left-handed batter, he offers the team management a useful option in terms of how the batting order can be shaped, potentially allowing the coach to tweak combinations depending on the match situation. Meanwhile, KL Rahul remains in excellent form and continues to enjoy strong backing from the management, which is likely to keep him as the side’s preferred wicketkeeper-batter for the foreseeable future. With the ODI World Cup scheduled next year in South Africa, Rahul’s experience is expected to be viewed as particularly valuable.

The next major point of debate is expected to centre on the balance between Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, and how the spin-bowling all-rounder slot should be filled. Jadeja’s recent returns in ODIs—both with the bat and in his bowling—have not matched expectations, and his batting approach may come under scrutiny because he typically bats in a position where the management expects more forceful intent. Still, the question remains: will it be Jadeja who makes way, or will Axar Patel be favoured instead, or could another player emerge as the best fit for that role?

Beyond the immediate squads, it is also understood that discussions have already started around the broader international calendar, including the World Test Championship cycle, the next T20I period, and the 50-over World Cup next year. With several important decisions on the horizon, it remains to be seen whether the selectors will announce key outcomes on the same day as the squad meeting or whether some calls will take longer to land.
