Pakistan opener Fakhar Zaman has shut down speculation about an immediate end to his T20 international career. The left-hander said he does not have plans to retire from T20 cricket, even though he had once considered stepping away after the T20 World Cup 2026.
Quick facts

- He said he has no intention of retiring from T20 internationals.
- Fakhar had previously considered retirement after the T20 World Cup 2026 but has changed his mind.
- He has 120 T20I appearances for Pakistan, with 2,494 runs at a strike rate of 132.51 and 14 fifties.
- In the Super 8 match vs Sri Lanka, Pakistan needed a 65+ run win to reach the semi-finals.

The 35-year-old has been one of Pakistan’s most consistent T20 performers, featuring in 120 matches in the shortest format. Across those outings, he has accumulated 2,494 runs at a strike rate of 132.51, including 14 half-centuries.
At the T20 World Cup 2026, Fakhar spent much of the tournament on the bench before being brought back for the high-pressure Super 8 game against Sri Lanka. Pakistan’s qualification equation was clear: they had to secure a victory by at least 65 runs to force their way into the semi-finals.
That target proved beyond reach, and Pakistan crashed out of the competition in the Super 8 stage. The exit also extended a difficult trend—this was the fourth consecutive ICC event in which Pakistan failed to reach the semi-finals.
Super 8 impact
Even though the result went against them, Fakhar stood out at the crease with a brisk 84-run knock off just 42 deliveries. His innings came with nine boundaries and four maximums, providing the kind of momentum Pakistan needed but ultimately couldn’t convert into qualification.
Fakhar’s remarks on retirement made it clear that the earlier thought of walking away has been shelved. Geo News reported him as saying that after the World Cup he had decided to retire from T20 cricket, but he now plans to continue and aims to finish his T20 journey on a high.
His recent form has also been a major part of the Lahore Qalandars’ PSL rhythm. In the league, Fakhar has produced 3,018 runs from 99 matches, striking at 141.82, including 24 fifties and two centuries.
Ball-tampering ban details
Separately, Fakhar’s current PSL situation stems from disciplinary action for ball tampering. The senior batter was found guilty in the fixture against Karachi Kings and was accused of violating Level 3 of the Code of Conduct, though he challenged the sanction.
Pakistan’s board outlined that Fakhar Zaman appealed the Match Referee’s decision, seeking suspension for two HBL PSL matches under Article 2.14 of the applicable Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel during the Lahore Qalandars vs Karachi Kings match. The incident was linked to the game on Sunday, 29 March at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
The PCB added that the appeal was heard by the PSL Technical Committee made up of Professor Javed Malik, Dr Mumraiz Naqshband, and Mr Syed Ali Naqi. After a de novo review—considering all evidence and hearing submissions—the committee rejected the appeal and confirmed the two-match ban imposed by Match Referee Roshan Mahanama.
